PLEASE.. No Driving to "daily exercise" or to walk your dog...

I think its about being sensible. Its about stopping too many people congregating in the same places.
If people went to the beach with their dogs pre covid they should still do that if they want. Doesnt matter If they walk there or not.

As for exercise well options are now somewhat limited so there will be more people out, running, cycling, walking whatever.

Similar to limechase I used to swim & do a bit or cycling. Cant swim now so i am doing quite a bit more cycling. I used to mainly go on the prom but now as the roads are not so busy trying different routes.
Oh i actually went to the prom tonight but not at 'peak time' it was going dark so very few people.

Again its about being sensible i will try to get out on my bike for EXERCISE.
Its not about going out to a tourist area & eating ice cream!!
It certainly aint going on the prom, finding a chippy (some are open),, scoffing fish & chips & then stopping on the comedy carpet for a few cans.

After the clocks go forward & as the weather improves you will likely see more people on the prom etc & treating it as a 'trip out' if it is not clamped down on.

No one is suggesting travelling out of area.
Wait till warm weather weekends though Lyth folk from the inland towns will no doubt be 'suggesting' to each other they come here.
Perhaps they may need roadblocks to stop cars & the likely influx of covid tourists. Police at train stations even not letting non locals in unless essential?

It’s obviously a reaction to the mass exodus of last weekend to beauty spots, parks, beaches and national parks. Long lines of walkers going up Snowdonia, people laughing and joking and not observing social distancing, etc.

The problem seems to be with the rather vague definition of ‘local’. For me, Fleetwood is local. It’s just up the coast: a run / short bike ride away. So now 2 people of the same family can’t travel in a car to walk a dog, where you travel in an enclosed vehicle, and can be more than 50 metres away from the nearest person most of the time.

Yet it’s okay to have key workers still working without adequate protection, to keep the airports open with no checks on anyone entering the country, to keep the Tube running (even with a reduced service), to have buses running and still taking passengers, to keep the courts open, for the public to be able to go to off-licenses / petrol stations / DIY shops / launderettes, queue 100 deep at Iceland in Cleveleys, queue round the block for the supermarket, queue at the pharmacy because they won’t answer the phone to arrange for a prescription delivery, walk past people on the pavement where someone often steps out into the road, etc.

To not lose sight of the purpose:
this is supposed to be all about stopping the spread of a highly contagious deadly virus.
Why not go into full on China mode and just stop everyone putting a toe outside the door and shut everything else down other than the hospitals?

👍 Well as long as you live in the same household Lime.

I think its to stop cycling clubs & the like.

Just dont throw your lad out & you will be fine! 😂
I can't throw him out he's 14.... But if he keeps up the "you're hard" "make me" "I dont care, nobody cares" Kevin the teenager routine, I doubt he'll see the weekend out 😮😜

Tried walking the Tangobears this morning but they broke their leads and ran off to the Farmers. So sad seeing them pawing at the doors and pining to get in. 😀

I know what the rules say.

It's OK for me to walk to the beach(or any open space), avoiding other pedestrians as best I can.

Then, excerise my dog off its lead on the beach(or any open space).

Then walk back from the beach, avoiding other pedestrians as best I can.

But if I drive to the beach (or any open space), I'm an idiot!? 🤔
Yes. It is NOT ALLOWED. Just follow the rules like everybody should.

Driving is not essential for me because I'm fortunate enough to be able to walk the mile to the nearest open space, or two miles to the beach. But many others can't walk that far.

Also, were I to drive, I wouldn't have to avoid all other the pedestrians there and back, because I would be totally isolated in my car.

It's all about the owner's personal circumstances, and using your common sense.
No, it's not. It's about following the rules. We could all apply "common sense" to suit our own personal circumstances. Continue to drive to walk your dog and I hope you get fined.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Stay local to exercise, says government

My interpretion of the above is:-
1) They can if it's a local space.
2) They can if it's under control (as per normal rules).
Your "interpretation" for number 1 is wrong. Follow the rules.
Your interpretation for number 2 is right - but please consider the other people.

I drove to my local supermarket and detoured half a mile to walk in a nature reserve with my other half.
She is recovering from knee surgery and the nearest decent park is nearly a mile away from the house.
Surely I am doing no wrong
You are "bending the rules". Dog walking should be from your home only. I guess that might not be great - but it's only the same as us hillwalkers/fellrunners being banned from anywhere not local (which is basically "anywhere" if you live on the Fylde) 🙁

You can drive to a local place, I can and did drive to Stanley Park tonight in my enclosed car instead of swerving around people on pavements, at the park I could easily stay at least ten feet away from others instead of a couple of feet on narrow pavements.

I was much more isolated than had I wandered around local streets.
That's not the point. Follow the rules like everyone else. Otherwise, within days EVERYBODY will be "just driving to my local park/beauty spot etc".
Think about it.

Sorry if I appear angry. I am angry if people flout the rules that the Government has laid down, devised by various "experts", to help keep the death toll down. Anyway, time for a cup of tea now, to chill out😀

I’ve been out with “the boy” this morning on walk from home to prom and up toward Norbreck and a quick dash on beach beating incoming tide. Made me realise how damn lucky us Seasiders are to have such ready made open spaces and almost unlimited when tide is out on the beach. You can maintain a healthy distance but still converse. Lots of solo joggers or couples cycling along on a traffic free environment.

Contrast that to the poor souls in the cities/towns where the only access to open space is through streets and passing other people heading toward or from that same spot. We should count our blessings that we get a constant supply of fresh air across the sea and fairly open skies surrounding us and not some built up conurbation with high buildings everywhere.

I promise you I am sticking to the rules and my dog only gets to and around Kingscote Park for his walk now.

However, it does make me think this. Why go out twice if you only need to go out once. I could combine a walk on the Queens prom with the dog where there is plenty of space and people keeping well apart with a trip for our weekly shopping to Sainsburys on Red Bank Rd. Both fall in the essential category.

Can I just ask you a question please 20's, nòt really to do with the virus, do you let your dog of its lead when exercising on Kingscote Park ?

I am not a bizzy, not going to report you, have 2 walks per day if you want and fly there by helicopter, just for my survey.

Yep I do. He loves to play "chase me" with other dogs off the lead which he did this morning. Had a great play for about five minutes so getting plenty of exercise in him. Always keep my eye on him with doggy bags at hand.
He doesn't like other groups of dogs or barking dogs either. Stops in his tracks if he sees or hears them.

Calm down!

I simply said people who can't walk to their local open space will have to drive to exercise their dog off the lead.

For instance, one of my family members is a blue badge holder, and they definitely do not need 'Your' permission to drive to the park/beach/Lawsons Road.

So, even though the rules are loose and open to interpretation, as it happens I have been walking and practicing my pavement slalom with all the other pedestrians! 👍🏻🥇

I am calm now. Been an interesting debate and it's something I feel strongly about in this time of national crisis ("following the "rules").
Maybe I would have been better born as a German (sorry to be stereotypical about Germans and I've only been there once so really have no idea - but for some reason "Jurgen the German" from Harry Enfield is coming into my head 🤣).

Lancashire Police have tweeted that driving to exercise is NOT permissible. You'll be warned today but fined from here on in.

Like I said, I'm not breaking any rules but if I were to, I'd simply say I was dong my essential shopping. And that would be true.

The more people look to circumvent the rules, the more likely the risk is increased. My conscience will be clear. The problem is, those who do break the rules don't give a stuff about anyone but themselves.

I've already covered this so I suggest you read my post again. If I'm only going out ONCE rather than TWICE, I'd say I'm halving the risk to both myself and to others. How do you get that I'd be increasing it?

I'm not specifically referring to your example. I'm talking about those who shop, go home then drive out to the Prom to exercise. It's not all about you 😉

I did point out that the rules aren't mutually exclusive. So to combine two rules together in my opinion isn't circumventing anything. It's using common sense.

Let's hope the police use their's. Good luck with that.

Load of wind and nonsense on this thread. We all know what to do/not do...that’s all there is to it

I hear what you say Blood but I imagine some might suggest that this thread demonstrates that different people have different interpretations of what they should and shouldn't do.

People round here are still putting out the garden waste bin and walking together in groups. For what ever reason some people don't hear or more likely, listen to the messages going out.

The government have said exercise locally which is vague but would certainly curtail the shenanigans of last weekend.
We went out for a walk by driving7 miles from home earlier in the week. On the 2 mile walk we met 3 people and was able to keep them several yards away. After the police intervention we did a walk from home, again about 2 miles and met more than 20 people. Never got too close with a bit of weaving about except for ne person that came up from behind riding a bike on the pavement and brushed against me. I certainly felt safer in the first walk. I'll follow what the police are saying and just hope others behave sensibly.
I also get it about RTA's and breakdowns. Anyway another 4 months and I will know every paving slab intimately.

They are still collecting garden waste here - seem to be different messages going out.

Lots of people in your area will be from the Asian community who might not be fully conversant with the broad Yorkshire dialect. Its a bit more mixed in Leeds and Huddersfield of course.

Many also rung in saying 'bin laden' previously which caused a bit of confusion as I recall 😉
