Pompey happy with a draw?

Be interesting to see how they set up on Saturday as judging by a lot of their fans comments, they'd take the draw now. Of course if we were 7 points clear with 10 games to go we'd be in meltdown if we drew a game but away from home against a team that has inflicted their worst result of the season, I get the impression that a draw would suffice (which I always think is a dangerous one for us!).

Fact is they probably over-rate us and that's why they'll take a draw.

Critchley probably will be. Going for a 0-0 is his default set up home and away. Luckily we have certain factors in our favour at home that seem to mean we play better than away.

It's impossible to say until 2 pm on the day and we see if Crotchless grows a pair and picks his best players and doesn't plan to defend their strengths.

He let the brakes off at their place and lets go down with a fight instead of worrying about them if we are to lose.

Pool weren’t all that at Shrewsbury. They are too timid in possession ( which they had a lot of), playing it safe ( backwards and sideways).rather than even trying the forward pass.

That's what happens when a home team sits there and defends letting the opposition have all the possession.

Portsmouth will be gunning for revenge I think, and we'll need to be at our best to win. Are we good enough? Personally I don't know, but at the end of the day we need 7 wins from 10 at least to make the play-offs thus if we don't win it will be 7 from 9. The confidence that a win might generate though could genuinely bode well for games to come.

It's rather surprising then that if he sets up for 0 0 draws that we haven't had one in the league since August.
These sort of things happen. Just like we've not had many away from home because the system no doubt ensures that it won't happen very often. Kind of my point.

Would love to know which home games bar the Peterborough one where he’s done that.

Only a win will suffice. I know they had some injuries when we played them away but beating them 4-0 and our home record… must win. Get the north bouncing and get them playing like they did against bolton and we’ll be in with a good chance +3

Well I bet the Portsmouth fans won’t be happy at the following

Referee for Saturday is Ollie Yates. He refereed the 4-0 away game win for us at Portsmouth and dished out 8 yellows and one red. ( red to their player)

Barnsley are putting together a good run of results and are at home to Bolton tonight so a win would put them very much into contention for an automatic place. Portsmouth look clear favorites to top the division but the worst thing they could do is start playing for draws. If they lose a couple then the chasing pack will be breathing down their necks. We could do with P'Boro losing at home to N'Hampton which would drag them back into the race for 6th place.

So the Shrewsbury manager was wrong when he said we were far the better team with better players?

With 4 teams chasing down the last promotion place, and others in a better position than us, a draw will see us further away from the promotion scramble

Yes, unfortunately a draw is definitely not good enough in our position. We’ve made it hard work for ourselves now. Too many ‘points dropped against teams like Port Vale at home’ occasions this season.

I still can’t quite work out why we’re not in a better position. I don’t think it’s as simple as the manager and the setup. Although I’m not denying these factors completely. Our squad has the quality for this league. What’s up with us?

Maybe an issue is that our players are trying too much to avoid the injuries which have plagued us the last couple of years?

Confidence is down but Bolton at home shows we are capable.

I think they lack mental strength to be honest and a bit of fighting spirit, we’ve seen in certain away games we just get bullied out of the game and don’t compete physically. We’re clearly better than burton Albion, port vale, cheltenham and Cambridge yet we lost against all 4 away and scored only one goal in those games. Simply because they made it scrappy and we couldn’t cope

Agreed, those games made us look average. I wonder if it’s the age of the squad or what?

Young players thrive under strong leadership on the pitch. We’ve missed it since Keogh left. I thought Bridcutt might have been the new answer to this experienced head but, alas.

We are very prone to conceding soft goals and have been all season.

Yep and I don’t put many of those down to Grimshaw, who’s saved us a fair few. We lack confidence and bite at the other end. Some games we look a different team, but it’s not often enough.
