Should Starmer resign?

I wonder if a certain Sir Anthony C. L. Blair KG, the ex-MP for the Sedgefield constituency in the County of Durham still has connections with the local constabulary? I never did discover whether Tony was a Freemason or not. But I suspect not and Keir will not be, being ex-director of the CPP.

It's all about the finest details but the Labour voices are now saying that they have proof that Starmer went back to work after his meal, which according to them puts him within the law at the time.
It will be interesting to see how this develops, this gamble could make or break Starmer.
Wes Streeting and Lisa Nandy continually being mentioned as potential leaders in the case that Starmer resigns.

The Tories are terrified that he will resign. Johnson and Sunak will then be placed in an untenable position, and will have zero credibility if they try to stay on. We're then left to choose between Mistrust, Gove and ...... well Theresa May???.

Labour has an array of talent to choose from as an election winning leader.

Steady on. It depends if the new incumbent can find another gear - most of them come across as fairly uninspiring career politicians. Nandy may be able to step up I suppose.
Andy Burnham would be a good choice as already discussed, but I am not really sure about any of the others. Yvette Cooper is sane, but probably doesn't have enough appeal with red wall voters.
BTW is Gove in a freezer or something? Since his nightclubbing in Aberdeen he has hardly been seen.

An array of talent 🤣 There isn't an array of talent in the entire House of Commons, never mind the Labour benches

Andy Burnham isn't an MP so isn't a choice at all.

If Starmer goes, Burnham must replace him. He's got a bit of energy. He can talk off the cuff. He has a bit of a personality.

Starmer is a minister not a leader. Nowt particularly against Starmer but he's trying to do a Blair tribute act without having the charisma of Blair.
Again, Burnham isn't a member of the house.

I don't think there's a barrier to Burnham being elected leader. He could take the position whilst waiting for a seat to be vacated.

Caroline Lucas is the sole Green MP but isn't the party leader, Sturgeon leads the SNP but Ian Blackford is the Commons leader.

Whilst I believe Andy Burnham would be an excellent choice, he's not for hurrying back to the Commons. he's been well beaten twice before in leadership battles. For me it must be Lisa Nandy. It should have been her last time; she's intelligent, comes across well on TV, she can handle the media and is a good Commons operator. As a Remainer in a Leave constituency she made it plain that there was no going back after the result of th referendum. She is a working class northerner and.....it's about time that Labour elected a female leader!

Ah right, fair enough, might make PMs questions a bit tricky?

Bi-election coming up in Wakefield - it's a long shot but not out of the question

Not sure the Conservative Party would wish him to go. With Calamity Boris at the helm Labour should be trouncing them. Starmer's complete lack of charisma is not what is needed to make true inroads.

Exactly. Let's face it, Pfeffel has painted Starmer into a corner of his own making with this holier than thou schtick which still people don't care for. An arch schemer vs a niave wet wipe. Frankly, it's men against boys.

Interestingly a poll was released yesterday showing Keir's net approval hasn't changed since the announcement of the investigation, and he had actually improved by 4 points on the "who would make best PM" question. The public so far dont care at all about this whole issue, and yet he may resign over it.

Cost of living crisis. That's all that matters. Conservatives are losing on which party is more trusted with the economy which should be the big red warning sign to them, just like when Labour were losing on the NHS under Corbyn.

Whether it's Keir or someone else, cost of living crisis should be priority A, B and C

When you look at the choice of Johnson or Starmer then the best thing you can do in life is to protect yourself as much as possible from the actions of government.
None of these people should tell us how to live our lives, I can't understand why so many people are such avid supporters of Johnson or Starmer.
I support Blackpool but I think Madine isn't very good(putting it politely) Johnson and Starmer are the political equivalents of the so called goal machine, not fit for purpose!!

When was the last PM fit for purpose? You can count on one hand the number who actually were.

Post war, regardless of policies and I'm far from a fan of the last two, probably only Attlee, Thatcher and Blair.

Rightly or wrongly I’m past caring.

What I will say is that working in the office through lockdown meant that you did mix more by default. I ate my lunch at the same bank of desks as 2 other staff members daily which was in the same room as 40 or so others.

In defence of Boris I’m quite sure we had cake one day, and in defence of Starmer we ate hot meals in that environment too.

It was a different lockdown in some ways to those working from home.

The lines are blurred and it’s really time we all moved past this to bigger issues, in my opinion.

Yeah not an extensive roll of honour is it, and like you say Blair and Thatcher were a long way from perfect but at least they seemed prime ministerial.
Never understood why people were so big on the sovereignty thing as a reason for leaving the EU, it wasn't like we had a deep pool of political talent being held back by those pesky Europeans.
We have a piss poor electoral system and a bag of shite bunch of politicians and the evidence is there for all to see.
A massive change is needed before I ever bother voting again.

Not really to do with whether he should resign but I was listening to an interview with the author of a biography of Starmer (the author is very left leaning - make of that what you will), but his main point as he explained was the contradictions in Starmers stated philosophy and his actions: he claimed to be a socialist but was and apparently still is very much in favour of privatisation and market driven economics. He was a human rights advocate but his time with the RUC, the CPS and as attorney general he trampled all over human rights laws in favour of police officers and (apparently) other governmental institutions. He claims to be an avid republican yet accepts a knighthood.

The author's opinion is that he does everything simply to advance his career, and that he has absolutely no substance beyond what will be read into his actions in relation to his advancement. The author refers to him as simply a nice haircut in a good suit. which i suppose on one level is the diametric opposite of boris Johnson, but it seems that Starmer's personal advancement seems to be the main driver, so he probably wont resign.

You should have morals and resign immediately!

The left of the Labour party (and now ex-labour party) hate centrists more than Conservatives judging by what many of them write online.
However, I'm not sure about Starmer myself, it's hard to know what he is for when there are no real alternative policies forthcoming from the party. I would hope that they will have something to present in the event of an election. If he would do anything to advance his career would he really have offered to resign like this? Johnson cares about being PM above almost anything, that is very clear.

Really? Have you studied Starmer's legal career? He's wiped the likes of Johnson off his shoes before he left the house of a morning.

I still wouldn't vote for him mind.

I don't think there's been the calm whereby you can set out even loosely where you want to go. Everything has been moving so fast. Just on the economy he/they have to wait to see how bad a mess BJ/they make of it. And then there is the autumn and the certainty of stagflation and real pressure on households. Tbh this should be addressed now not by reducing personal direct/indirect taxes but protecting against price rises that will come in the autumn.

Boris far too sharp for him but like you, I still wouldn't vote for either.

Johnson isn't sharp at all, Rayner takes him apart so much they had to come up with thr 'legs' reason, I just think Starmer is a terrible communicator.
Keith is the opposite of a maverick whatever one of those is. Meat and drink to Pfeffel.

I watch the BBC Politics show most mornings.
All todays Tory kept saying was that Starmer should go.
Even though it hasn't yet been proved that he did wrong, the Tory kept repeating it.
I find it rather strange that the Police have fined over 200 Tories this week but did not to give BoJo another fine.
Was it Hamlet who said 'There's something rotten in the state of Denmark'.
For Denmark substitute 'House of Commons'.

Not true.

The fines AFAIK have gone to civil servants, who are not "Tories" by definition.

And the PM wasn't even present at the event that's triggered the latest round of fines.

This can be summed up very easily: he is a politician.

95%+ are entirely unideological, and are there purely for access to the levers of power. Left or right; they all went to private schools and oxbridge.

Apparently Susanna Reid took him apart on GMTV about a week ago, they blamed that one on him throwing up on himself just before he went on air, food poisoning but probably a hangover. Also did the thing where he hid in a fridge, truth is he really isn't very good and has just enough self awareness to realise that in the world he operates in he is never the cleverest person in the room.

If he gets fined, yes. His progress is as good as can be expected after Corbyn. Last week Labour made significant progress after very good results in 2018. It looks like Labour are heading for national victory.

Angela Rayner didn't and she gets more grief on here than anyone.

Keir didn't, his mum was a nurse and his father a toolmaker, he got into grammar school then went to the University of Leeds. He's actually pretty 'relatable' in that sense and comes from relatively humble beginnings, but I think because he was a leading QC and the way he comes across people presume he's a poshboy born in wealth like so many are. He doesn't really play it to his advantage.
