Sunderland v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 04.10.22

Well I was critical about the first half, so it's only fair I give the lads some credit in the 2nd half. At least we pressed, upped our work rate and probably should have taken some of the chances. Over all, a fair point. Special mention for both Maxwell and Thompson, who I thought were our best players. Loads of work to do, Lavery is not a winger. Nor is Yates but he at least causes defenders some problems and never stops trying.

I think he does a good job for us. Does a lot of the dirty work and actually quite good on the ball. Maybe I’m wrong but I personally don’t know how he is singled out. Did Wright even play?
Quite good on the ball? He either gives it away or has it taken off him more than enough. His free kicks are poor, his corners even worse, he is living on his two goals in the playoffs. If he is the best we can do, we are in more trouble than I thought.

i think steve thommo called it correctly in commentary - we were maybe set up a bit too conservatively in the first half and invited pressure. not enough support out wide when trying to break forward. there was much more support down the flanks in the second half and it showed.

we can take the positives out of that second half display and move on. happy with a point all things considered.

easy to say when you didn't post during the match your thoughts on the team / game but you chose to comment for the first time on the matchday thread on what other posters views were, all safely after the event - just saying.....
Because I wasn't overly concerned. I've seen enough games of football over the years to know not to post in a knee jerk manner. As I said, great point 👍

To be honest i only watched the second half as my lad had football and we were quality
First half was shaping up for a Rotherham repeat and looking like it wouldn't end well if Sunderland came back out with a quick start.

Just glad they didn't strike first in the end. The gameplan was pretty much a case of just hoping they didn't.

He must be doing something right for managers to keep picking him. Not saying he is a world beater but far more problems than Dougall to worry about.

Ahh so you hate the manager

Why?

Don’t hate him. Just very concerned with some of his tactics. Repeating the Rotherham performance and sticking with 5 at the back. Tonight playing strikers on the wing. Could have been much worse tonight but thankfully they didn’t score in the first half where most teams would.

Just don’t get him. Hope he proves me wrong.

Wasn’t he the leading goal scorer last season? Out of Yates, Madine and Lavery, I reckon Lavery is the only one who could perhaps score more than 5 this season.
He looks a completely different player since his injury, whatever he had last be season has gone and it doesn’t look like it’s coming back, he couldnt hit a barn door

Seriously Appleton needs to drop Dougall from set pieces/corners he’s just dreadful I’d just drop him full stop but that’s just me.

Thompson needs to be dropped from taking throw in’s out of 5 throw in’s first half he found a blue shirt once and only then it was the top of Madine’s head which went then straight to a Sunderland player.

Seriously what’s difficult about corners and throw in’s it’s the basics FFS why do we struggle week in week out?

I get that. He does look as though lost his sharpness but I’d rather judge him as a striker ; not Bowler’s replacement.

Why is everyone slagging off our corners? We created our best two moments tonight from corners.

Sunderland are the worst team we've played this season, and if we were a bit braver / positive were there for the taking
That's nonsense. Reading, udders, and millwall I thought were worse for a start. Thought Sunderland passed it around very well 1st half but never looked that threatening, obviously missing Stewart and Simms. Appleton put it right 2nd half and unlucky not to win. I thought his tactics were very good tonight, as on Saturday.

Sticking with 5 at the back?

Don't understand that at all as we only did it once because we had no midfield players

Appleton wants to play 433 and we did today, second half better side

We had enough midfielders to play three in the middle against Millwall unless he doesn’t fancy Carey.

You can create playing defensive midfield, have you ever played football?
Mmmm... yeah i have

But you are criticising a player for not creating when his role today was to clearly get the ball from our defence and keep things moving in a simple fashion

Not sure what you expected him to do to be honest
