Sunderland v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 04.10.22

Needs to play corbeanu and Poveda on Saturday and if Gabriel is back put connolly in midfield with dougall and patino
Shit first half. Very good second half. Could have won and could have lost but for maxi save at the death. Happy with a point.
Bring on Watford on Saturday. Hopefully start with the same 11 as last Saturday against Norwich

For me, Maxwell, Connolly, Thorniley or Patino. Ekpiteta did well as well. Thompson was good but seems to do the hard bits well but then messes up with a simple pass.

Seriously Appleton needs to drop Dougall from set pieces/corners he’s just dreadful I’d just drop him full stop but that’s just me.

Thompson needs to be dropped from taking throw in’s out of 5 throw in’s first half he found a blue shirt once and only then it was the top of Madine’s head which went then straight to a Sunderland player.

Seriously what’s difficult about corners and throw in’s it’s the basics FFS why do we struggle week in week out?
If you took crap dead balls and shite throw ins in Sunday football you’d be punched in the pub after the game, there’s no excuse!

Mmmm... yeah i have

But you are criticising a player for not creating when his role today was to clearly get the ball from our defence and keep things moving in a simple fashion

Not sure what you expected him to do to be

I expect him to more incisive with his passing and to be braver on the ball considering the hype about him when he signed, hopefully he will get better the more games he plays

Does Appleton need to keep putting us down? I understand why he says it but we were playing Sunderland! All a bit negative.

"Coming up against good teams, we've got to remember who we are a little bit, we're not going to dominate every game of football that we play. We're coming up against top sides who are going to have spells in games, whether that's a 20 minute spell or 45 or we're under the pump for 70 minutes and have a good 20 minute spell and win the game,"

Don’t hate him. Just very concerned with some of his tactics. Repeating the Rotherham performance and sticking with 5 at the back. Tonight playing strikers on the wing. Could have been much worse tonight but thankfully they didn’t score in the first half where most teams would.

Just don’t get him. Hope he proves me wrong.
Injuries are playing a massive part in our selections though

Hopefully once he plays further forward when we have a better option who can keep the ball deeper he will be

But for now he's doing ok in this role as there simply isn't anybody else who can keep play moving in the defensive pivot

Maybe Stewart or Bridcutt when fit

We could have played 4-3-3 against Millwall and not sure what the excuse tonight was for playing strikers on the wing. Corbeanu didn’t look tired when he came on and did more than Lavery in 10 minutes….. as you would expect being a winger.

Okay well you're lucky then because I felt like jumping out of my window into traffic for more enjoyment.
Yep we couldn't string 2 passes together and backed off and allowed them to cut through with ease.

No pressing from the front hardly or ineffective.

It shows how important it is 2nd half as we were all over them and they couldn't get near our goal hardly.

Its great we finished like that but why couldn't we press from the off?

Still no complete performance yet this season, its all different halfs and spells.

That 2nd half has to be the minimum benchmark.

He probably played 3 strikers as ever fcuker has been moaning about us not signing one and being wasteful in front of goal recently

Bloody hell you're still harping on about Bowler, do you know what we actually offered him to sign a new contract?
Him signing a new contract is irrelevant to be honest

He was under contract for another 12 months, so we had the option of keeping him for that time

He keeps saying things like this. Bit annoying really. When he was saying it during the transfer window I was thinking that it won't encourage players to come to us.

I would like to see Corbeanu as a striker.
He is our highest goal scorer and was unlucky against Norwich. Love to sign him if the turmoil at Wolves gives us an opportunity.
Lavery is ok but use him as an impact player in a forward role, he does score for Northern Ireland

Yep, I didn't like that at all, can't imagine Holloway or Critchley saying it.

True but I always thought if someone want's away it usually effects their form if you block it.

Some optimism can be taken from that second half performance, so it shows we can do it.

Like Diaz at Blackburn or Grimes at Swansea

Nah professional footballers with good character play for who pays their wages

I'm in absolutely no doubt we should have kept Josh Bowler and he would have played for us not a problem

Maxwell saved us a point at the end, but I thought we deserved one tonight.

The first half was woeful tbh, in most respects. We were soft as shite, slow, and couldn't pass the ball to a teammate at all. Very poor indeed.
However, it was encouraging again to see a much much better performance in the second half. Far more aggressive, and less prone to be pushed off the ball. We showed more strength and desire. Not perfect, and the passing still wasn't great. But I felt we wanted it more than they did, and we just need time to click.

I think both tonight (2nd half) and on Saturday, we made good progress up the pitch and got in to some very good positions on numerous occasions, but our decision making in the final third is pretty dreadful. Consistently. That is the single biggest worry for me at the moment, there doesn't appear to be much quality where the final pass or cross is concerned, so we're struggling badly for goals.

Final point - I don't like Appleton talking us down like he did after the game. Tony Parkes used to do it and we only started climbing the league when Ollie got the players and fans believing that we belong here and could achieve. If you don't believe you can do better than clubs that get bigger gates, then you probably won't. Less of the small club mentality please. I hate it when our own fans refer to us as 'little old Blackpool', we don't need the manager doing it too.

Anyway, good point tonight, stops the rot and hopefully gives the players that little bit more confidence and belief going in to the Watford game.

Quite good on the ball? He either gives it away or has it taken off him more than enough. His free kicks are poor, his corners even worse, he is living on his two goals in the playoffs. If he is the best we can do, we are in more trouble than I thought.
And simons dog is called kenny

I think this sums it up from the Sunderland site...

"Against Preston I was ok. I thought ok they came to defend.

Tonight, I couldn't complain if we lost"

We played well 2nd half, if we can produce those spells more consistently well start moving up the table.

A few more comments..

"First time I've been pissed off this season. That was wank that, we were lucky to get a point. Really poor return from two of the easiest games we are gona have all season. Insanity we only have two strikers at the club. We'll suppose that's our answers about being mid table."

"After that second half glad with a point"

"☹️ We didn’t deserve anything tonight"

"Michael f***ing Appleton. He does it every time against us, every time he susses us out. I thought Blackpool well deserved their point. They maintained their high press throughout and we rarely looked like scoring. In fact, they were the better team in the second half.
When are our big blokes back?"

Can't complain about a point away from home, encouraging the players were able to react and Appleton was able to motivate them enough to change it around, performance wise. Let's not do the Lavery/Yates winger thing (though I thought Yates had a decent game) ever again.

Agree on the talking ourselves down all the time bollocks, it's driving me insane and makes me think that the board/manager think there's a very good chance we will be relegated and are preparing us. Could go ten years without hearing the term "punching above our weight" let's be "a breath of fresh air" again instead.

Can't spend what we haven't got but we should be performing better than this with the amount we have spent.
We are a really bad watch and the blame for that lies mainly with the coaching staff.
You’re absolutely mental. How much have we spent?

Why couldn’t we sign a striker, that both our current manager and previous manager wanted?

I suppose, with your love for the board and dislike towards the coaching staff, you believe it was Mansford and Gerrity that gave the half time team talk which turned us around completely last night, not MA & co?

If we struggle this season, the blame lies solely on the board failing to fill positions we drastically need players in.

That's nonsense. Reading, udders, and millwall I thought were worse for a start. Thought Sunderland passed it around very well 1st half but never looked that threatening, obviously missing Stewart and Simms. Appleton put it right 2nd half and unlucky not to win. I thought his tactics were very good tonight, as on Saturday.
But it can't be a tactic to play short passes to the opposition on a regular basis, which is what we did in the 1st half. Got away with being shit in the 1st half unlucky not to win in the 2nd.

I'm not mental, I think I'm just a bit more calm and relaxed than you, and I don't make demands on other people on how to spend their money. Imagine if you stood in Blackpool town centre shouting at people which shops they should go in and how much they should spend, that's mental!
I'm not a blind lover of the board and I don't hate Appleton and the coaching staff.
On occasion I've criticised the former and I am a regular defender of Appleton. We are one of the smallest clubs in the division with one of the smallest budgets, Appleton has to make the most of what he has, 1st half he didn't, 2nd half much better and we should've won.
I can see that we need a CB, CM and a CF but demanding that Sadler buys them when I don't know the full ins and outs of the clubs finances seems a bit pointless. I know what players we do have and Appleton on occasion doesn't use them well enough but generally I prefer his football to Critchleys.

A lot of our players aren’t good enough.

If we can’t afford the players; that’s fine. Tell Appleton and the fans that. Instead, we’re being lied to on a regular basis that “he didn’t want to move” “he used us to get a better deal” “he failed his medical.”

A lot of the players aren't good enough. As for the whys and wherefores of players apparently coming but then it falling through we just don't know for sure. Preston are a similar size club to us look at their finances! Sadler isn't in the same league as the Hemmings family financially to the best of my knowledge so can't fund us like they were.
Should he tell us the truth, I don't think our fan base can handle the truth!

Did Sadler order the Code Red?

They handle it a lot better than being lied. Our previous owners lied, constantly, which is what the board are doing now to us.

I don’t give a fuck what anyone says - this is all falls on Sadler & The Board. We point blank refuse to spend money on the playing side of things. It’s absolutely pathetic.

I hope Mansford is happy claiming his 250k year salary while the team he’s meant to represent get relegated to league one. ** idiot.
We go to a club that gets 40,000 and get a draw . They get players like Simms because they can afford 4 x our wages . Your are a clueless buffoon.

No one wants him to spend millions, no one has? But don't go around a million bid here or there and then don't actually get anyone in? No different to what the Oystons did for years.
We have gone to a club with 40,000 fans and got a draw. A club that Ellis Simms preferred because of the wages and you moan because we haven't spent money . Even though we are getting a new training ground and east stand . We are losing money ,but he still invests and you compare him to the Scum . How old are you 10.

Good result . We go to a club with 4x our fan base . They have home advantage . They can afford huge wages compared to ours and yet ,over the 90 minutes we matched them in nearly every way . How the hell we have so many moaning gobsh@tes on a Blackpool website baffles me . Do Knobbers not have their own ?

A new training ground and East stand doesn't keep you in the Championship. It's players that do or don't do that. Are ours good enough? And I think to most on here it's obvious where we need strengthening. But we failed to do that pre-season.

SO did the Oystons make unrealistic bids for players or not? They did and they are doing the exact same and the manager is talking about the free agent market. It's exactly the same.
