The Summer Transfer Thread - Part 1.

If we are looking for a creative midfielder, who also weighs in with goals, we could not go far wrong with Owen Moxon, who has just won promotion with Carlisle. He was named in the League 2 team of the season and is a good size too.
Not a chance. Carlisle not interested in selling now they’re up.

Why would they be? I fail to see why we think we can pick off players or managers (Wellens for example) when they've just been promoted to the league we will be playing in next season.
We are pretty unlikely to be offering fantastic terms to anyone, we need to be looking at released players, the cream from relegated clubs or up and coming from lower down the pyramid. Easy said, I know, but we have to be realistic.

Our wages will actually be very good this season. We pay well and will attract some very good signings.

But are they any better?
No, in fact keepers in the 60s,70s and 80s were so much superior to present day I think they were a different breed.
That may well be the case, but it's not the argument being made. The argument is that in today's game, a keeper should be at least 6'2. The general population is a lot taller these days, footballers are also taller and more physical than they used to be. Put a short goalkeeper in now and they get found out. Especially from set-pieces.

We've got one in the u18s who's 6'5".

I guess the thinking is that we are a club that will be at the top of the table, while Carlisle, despite having just been promoted, are likely to be at the bottom. Many players having done well move to clubs that are more likely to get promoted than their current club. I'd hope that we have a better chance of promotion than Carlisle!

Great reason to get rid of Grimmy then only 6' 1"🤦

Career total 27 goals in 204 appearances, is hardly prolific.
Unsure where you've got those stats from. He's scored 41 goals and assisted 20 for Oxford, in 230 appearances. (19 league goals in his last 2 seasons alone)

That's a goal involvement every 3.5 games as a deep-lying midfielder.

Yes he takes penalties, but so did Charlie Adam...

Nobody could accuse Charlie of being prolific either, but his game wasn’t really about goals. You are insinuating that Brannagan, whose name I’m fed up of hearing, is the answer to all our woes, he isn’t.

This whole conversation is a waste of time. He rejected us in the Championship because he didn’t want to move, he’s now on way more money than we have could, or should spend on him.

Tyler Walker just released by Coventry. He’d be a great signing for a L1 club.
Injury prone so would rather pass, but Michael Rose is a player I think would be quite decent who was also released by Cov.

Been a bit par player for them in the Championship but was a stalwart for them in League 1 in their promotion winning season.

He's not tall enough for my liking. In League One his other traits can possibly make up for it but I do think that his height will hold him back in his career. However well he does, it's a limiting factor.
He's not a rufty tufty 6'1" either. Last season some teams sussed this out & crowded around him at set pieces, isolating him on his line. Some shorter keepers are very physical & make space for themselves.

Based on absolutely nothing other than the fact he's been released by Coventry and was a key part in their L1 promotion team, I wonder if we are interested in Fanky Dabo. He's the poor bugger than missed the deciding penalty.

And that’s from midfield

Always been a fan of Grimmy to be honest.who wants a big 6ft5 lump who takes an ice age to get down for shots.we won’t get anyone better than Danny Grimshaw at this level.he’ll do for me.

Depends if we get good money for Jerry, surely we will have some to spend. There again using your logic we have no need to sell Jerry as he is still a decent length contract.
At the end of the day money talks.

I’ve seen Charlie Wellens (son of Richie) has been released by the Man United academy. 20 years of age and can play midfield and defence. Critchley can nurture and develop young talent. If he’s like his dad - who we also picked up from United - then he could be worth a risk ?

Paul Dalglish and Steve McMahon Junior had more of their mums in them.

Its a harsh world.

Almost 300 posts and over a month since this thread was opened and not one solid rumour let alone a signing.
It's a slow burner.
Rumours a winger from Skelmersdale Utd called Burns in talks. I reckon this will be a very good signing if it comes off...

Trained with Barnsley U21 in Jan so this has been on the cards for some time. United U23s were very good at passing the ball around and comfortable on the ball
If he is potentially as good as his dad then he would be a great signing for our Dev setup

John Burridge was 5ft 11, but in my opinion was the best Blackpool keeper I have seen play for us, and I go back to towards the end of George Farm, Gordon West then Tony Waiters.
🧡UTMP🧡

And don't forget Craig Allardyce, possibly the worst player I've ever seen and I don't just limit that to Blackpool, I mean ever! 🤣
I have a cracking Craig Alladyce story….

Tony Hesketh is a good mate of mine (managed a lot of local semi pro sides and is a Lancashire footy legend) In 1994, Tony was managing an amateur side and took two young kids from PNE on loan for a month, one was Craig Allardyce. After a couple of weeks and two absolute nightmare performances from Craig, Tony got a call from Gary Peters asking him how Craig was doing. On hearing how bad he was, Peters apologised and asked for him to be sent back. The next day, big Sam calls Tony and asks is it true that you think my son is crap. Tony takes a breath… yes Sam he’s awful, he’d never play for me at this level (NW Counties) if all my players were fit. Oh.. said Sam thanks … bye.

3 months later big Sam joins Blackpool and brings his cart horse son with him.

He hated us clearly !!!

I met Tony Hesketh a few times when he was at Lancaster. Thoroughly nice guy who built some good teams at that level.

Main memory of Craig Allardyce was the bizarre documentary from when he and a couple of others became the first English players to play in China. And he didn’t do too well there, either!

Agree up to a point, but there is no way centre forwards are more physical than the 60s and 70s. EVERY club played with a forward that would take the ball AND the keeper!
I'll never forget Gary Sprake of Leeds knocking the hard man Bobby Gould out with a right hook after Gould took the keeper and didn't get the ball.
These things happened every game up and down the league's
Height had nothing to do with it.

Tony was one of the PE teachers at my high school, Ashton-on-Ribble. 😁
