Whereas it's not something I would have started a thread about, the fact is the o/p has a very good point. It's been going on for years on AVFTT the negative stance about our national football team. Was even happening just before this tournament started.
 
It’s probably the years of constant disappointment and terrible performance the national team have put in. Even going into last night’s game I had that feeling of dread in back of my mind. This team is different though, we play like a team and it’s great to see.
I hope we win it, and if we do the country will go ** mental. Can’t wait for Wednesday now.

They can't argue with you on that one 20's.

Plenty on here were quick to give you the club over country spiel when you were discussing England matters during qualification etc.

You bought your little puppy for life and not just for Christmas.

So you can’t be a true England fan if you have slagged them off in the past? If that rule applies then none of us are Blackpool fans.

I’ve an interest in watching England, but to me its not the be all and end all of football, I just happen to be English so that’s where I hang my hat, same with Blackpool but that means more to me than being English.

But like watching Rugby, I’ve an interest in the 6 Nations say and want England to do well, but I’m not bothered if they lose, there is no real connection to the National teams as I don’t go to matches week on week watching them.

Quite happy to be an England “plastic”, can just watch a game and enjoy/not enjoy at my leisure.

And Blackpool were in the lower leagues of football for 29 years and a few more recently. How bad was that? But you still supported them. Like I keep saying, fairweather fans only wanting to support a team when they are doing well.

Yeah fair enough but I have just never felt the same attachment to England football team. My dad never took to me to see them. Ive seen them once. It's a very different thing.

Of course you are allowed to be a "plastic" - your term not mine - England supporter.

I was just agreeing with 20's in that, there are plenty on here who have not always got behind England in the past.

If 20's - not just him but it could often be - was discussing an England performance in a lesser game, he would often get the club over country spiel from other posters.

No big deal and not a crime as you suggest.

No anger from me in that post 2020 - are you related to 20’s btw ;-) - I’m just saying it how I feel it and I think Plastic England fan sums me up perfectly - there are quite a few springing up here and there standing on giant Cross of St George flags.

It means more to others I guess and they get offended when people don’t feel the same way as them.

On reflection though, it’s probably no wonder our teams always go out of tournaments too early, when the vast majority of our supporters suffer from premature ejaculation…

Come on, England have been the serial underachievers since 1966, no other major footballing nation has flunked like us. France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain even Portugal have won major tournaments. We've been dreadful and that manifests into negativity, let's enjoy the result and take one game at a time. They'll be shite again if the Danes beat us.

This. God knows what they will be like if we actually reach the final. We are all used to 20s trying to dictate how we all think. But it's a bit much getting lectures about loyalty from the resident Fleetwood fan.
 
People have tired over the years at seeing one failure after another. 1966 is before many of us were born so failure is all we know. In that time, there has been a World Cup or Euros every 2 years so that will be 26 consecutive failures!!!

Which reminds me, have England won the competition yet or is the O/P content with England just reaching semi-finals?

For me supporting your club is totally different to supporting your country . . . personally I get more enjoyment out of Blackpool beating Preston than I would if England won the World Cup.

As others have said England have under performed for many years and despite over the years having some of the best players in the world haven't achieved anything in most of our lifetimes. Are we not allowed to have a go at them for this ? It doesn't mean we are anti England . . it means we want better from our team.

This group of players have no stand out superstars but seem to have a great blend and are coming good at the right time.

Loads on here have slagged off Southgate . . does that make them anti English?

We should be winning tournaments like this and really hope we do 👍

Even a few on here slagging off the decision by Nissan to open a multi million pound battery plant in Sunderland last week.
Loads of threads continually moaning about Boris, what a crap Government we have, the vaccination roll out, find one from me that’s negative?
FFS we even had people on here arguing wether that British tennis girl was British enough to be called British.
I sometimes wonder what people want in life other than moaning.

I was criticised last night for previously saying the EPL isn't all that. That makes me a fair weather fan apparently

Vauxhall are also announcing this week the making of Electric vans at Ellesmere port the doom mongers will be out in force again.
 
I'm not sure why people can't distinguish between criticising England and being Anti-England? Our history in this tournament is absolutely shocking for a footballing nation of our size, and i've often been critical of the national team - but i'm far from anti-England, i'm desperate for them to do well.
We've had an excellent tournament so far even if it's not always champagne football, and it is always an achievement to reach the last four. But compare to Germany - they've qualified for the knock out stage of the Euro's ten times and in those ten times, this time is the only one where they've not reached the semi finals. This is why you get people knocking the England team - because they've grossly underperformed historically. It's as simple as that.

I've not been a fan of Southgate, but you can't argue with his record vs other managers and he is starting to win me round. I thought he was being too negative but i'm starting to think it isn't negative, he's just getting the team playing with a bit of intelligence and nous, and he's outthinking the opposition. He's also been brave with his selections as he would get a lot of stick if we'd been knocked out considering the players he's left out. It takes a strong character to resist the urge to play all the top creative players we have at the same time.

Johnson is crap and it is embarrassing that we as a nation think he is the best leader available to us but there are loads of good things about being English and living in England.
One of them being that we can freely call Johnson a lying, cheating, self serving, pompous, snobby, arrogant, lazy fat waste of space!
As for the England team, excellent performance and result. Such a strong squad with so many options, I hope Southgate continues to get his team selection right, this tournament is winnable!!
