Watford v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 14.01.23

We have been crying out for experienced players in midfield. Continuing to start with Carey and Patino is naive, Appleton has been the architect of the teams downfall for the past three months. If he can't see this, he should go back to the lower leagues where he clearly belongs.

Simon Sadler and Mansford seem happy with it or they'd of done something about it
These two are the problem, don’t know what they’re doing and I believe I’ve read that Mansford is Appletons mate so as I’ve said many times before the club just isn’t right. Sadler needs to bring DOF and strong one. Wholesale changes needed in the background!

Appleton needs to change this or we will lose. Watford made two subs at half time to try and take the initiative while we've got some good players on the bench with MA watching and hoping, rather than making something happen.
It's just so predictable, and MA is supposed to know more about football than we do.

Why on earth he never changes things before we inevitably concede is a total mystery. There's no attempt to win the game, it's all risk averse and the reason why is that MA doesn't really believe in BFC. He doesn't believe we are a big enough club to be in this league. So he isn't too down when we lose because he doesn't expect us to be anything more than fodder.

We need someone in who believes in BFC.

Persevering with Carey and Patino together just makes no sense at all. Two young lads learning their way. They are walking through us and they are not even a particularly decent team.
they might be quite a good pairing going forward IF we actually played through the midfield, I hate to think what our long ball stats are today.

defensively they both put in a shift, but Patino is a bit of clumsy tackler, and gives away quite a lot of free kicks. even when he plays dougs he puts him at the top of a midfield three. i would expect hell stick the newboy there as well.

Unfortunately if he does we could be cut well adrift by then and staring league 1 in the face.
The board won't sack him after bringing players in as that's daft. As I've said he's got 4-5 games to save his bacon. That was not the team I expected given our additions, even Bridcutt managed a half on his debut & if Trybull couldn't do the same either off the bench or starting I'd be surprised. Yates should have started too with Gaz, with Bowler & CJ sharing a half each.

I know it's easy to say in retrospect, but it was obvious that our midfield was going to be overrun, being too inexperienced and lightweight. If nothing else, Lyons looked perfectly fit and capable to have played today, freeing up Connolly to play in midfield. From what I heard on the commentary ,Bowler and Rogers had no service so playing the Appleton "talisman " No Goals Madine was a complete waste of time. I can't be arsed looking for the last time he scored, but I do remember the penalty miss against the scum.
If you're not going to play your best chance of scoring, ie. Yates then you get what you deserve. AND WE DID !!!!!!!!

He showed a few times that he still has got it
to be honest i was never convinced by bowler, one of those players for me who can look very good with a tricky turn and the odd goal, but cant contribute regularly, and defensively was always a liability (not a popular opinion on this board i know). the one thing today though was he didnt try to defend, but it does mean whoever plays right back will be exposed.

They sacked Grayson for the exact uninspired strategy free lumpen nonsense we're currently playing, so you never know...

Let's be honest, today the new players looked rusty, the front pairing one player was wrong, we looked weak in the middle AGAIN & we really missed Proveda's recent energy. We've now got options, that for some reason weren't used at all today

Ok, so he gets your 4/5 games, we don’t win any, what then. We would be in the position of 15 games left and needing to win most, if not all, of them. Which manager, with any sense, would come to a club which is not only sinking but is nestling in Davey Jones locker?

You need to blend grit with talent. Too many non physical lads playing.
CJ and Carey as starters - not for me.
Bowler showed us what we've been missing.

Sadler is a fan....I think?
No win in 10..just can’t control long enough periods in any game to even give us a hope....midfield is like a wilderness....nothing....2 weeks to sort it or down we go by a good distance...🙁

bowler was a peripheral figure for most of the game, had one decent run with a pass at the end, mostly ran into trouble. saying that we hardly played to bowlers strengths. I thought Rogers was decent but hes another who has a tendency to try too much and is a bit head down at times.

Appleton on Radio Lancs saying we were the team on the front foot and looking very comfortable and the score not reflecting the play.
Marv has done his hamstring.
Poveda out with groin strain

Yes, and the manager played the wrong right back. We all know of Bowler's inadequacies and strengths. He wasn't brought back here to defend was he ? If so we are really in trouble. He needs service, and that's the manager's problem to solve.
It was patently obvious today that the players selected would deliver nothing

Christ on a bike!....these players are getting these injuries because the tactics are CRAP!

if appleton thinks we were the team on the front foot then he's more deluded than even i think he is. we had a bright spell after yates came on for five minutes but i cant seem to remember any point in the game where we had sustained pressure.

I think we were on the front foot when they scored the first goal. We were coping with them quite comfortably at that point and starting to get forward more.

been saying that for a while, the defensive disorganisation means more stretched tackles and interceptions. i think the disorganisation is also responsible for our awful red card record.

In all fairness today we were playing well defensively, but Watford wer getting through to our 18/20 yard line with minimal effort, often picking up the ball midway in the own half and just driving forward unopposed

i think we were coping with their strikers in general but as always we allow teams to play up to and around the 18 to 25 yard line and from there anythings possible.
