What’s gone on between the club and Thorniley?

Your reading something into it that doesn’t exist.
Yep - all I read from that article is Appleton saying he wants to see that he maintains consistency and not let him get distracted, but there will be a time in the new year to discuss contracts.
It's a balancing act I guess - I'm sure Thornily's agent is working hard to secure him a decent contract too, with us or elsewhere.
Personally, I'd like to see him signed up - he's dependent without standing out, and is only 25, so should get even better.

He’s probably wanting a pay rise which Appleton will no doubt have to force out of the club as we all know we don’t like to spend money.

For me, he’s as valuable to our team as Patino & Yates. He is consistently an 8/10 and goes about his business quietly and very well. If we do let him go, it’s a massive misjudgement. I don’t think we could find a centre half of his calibre.

The fact he had to go out on loan to get game time and has come back and secured a spot in the starting XI week in, week out also speaks volumes for his character and the kind of person he is. He’s a valuable asset to the club IMO.

I don't see any problem . If he gets a new contract with us or anyone else ,you may find he doesn't give as much . If he carries on playing well , then he knows he will get offered a better contract with Blackpool or give himself a bargaining chip for another club . Appleton is doing the right thing.

I have zero doubt that we are trying to tie him down to a new deal, these things are rarely played out in the public eye. Hopefully the club will use the World Cup break to sit down and talk with all the players we'd like to extend deals.

Nice to see Appleton appreciating Thorniley's performances this season, seeing
that he preferred Williams to him earlier in the season

The truth is no one knows what goes on in contract negotiations apart from the club, player and agent. We only get to hear after the event.
It'd be stupid of anyone from the club to profess that we've tied JT down to a 2 year contract only for news of him signing for Brighton to surface.
Appleton is only giving the minimum in interviews on the subject and for that I applaud him.

It feels like he’s still having to prove himself. I honestly don’t know what more he has to do.
It feels like that to you.

In reality he doesn't have to prove his worth to anyone.
He has more than shown himself to be a competent, calm defender.

It again depends on his wage demands? If he’s an average wage earner now in the squad, would you make him the best paid player?

Is he replaceable with similar or better talent at a lower or equivalent wage?

He’s been solid this season if not one of our better players so I’d like him to stay, however I’m not convinced I’d want him as one of our top earners at the cost of other options

“First and foremost, let’s make sure he continues to play well”. That’s Appletons words, not mine. I personally think he’s one of our most consistent players so simply don’t understand that phrase when applied to Thorniley.

Haven't read the article but I bet it continues........."any contract talk can mess with a players head etc etc"
Leading very nicely into what was mentioned earlier.
That, after the games we've got upto the world cup break, 4 in which Appleton wants him to continue to play well, he may sit down and negotiate then🤷

I'm not an agent, player or in fact anything to do with professional football but I'd assume that would be the best way to sort the JT situation out when there is a 4 week break for both the club and JT to sort it one way or another.

I agree that Thorniley has always been professional whilst at the club (even being papped about by the snake) and I've posted many a post on the value of JT to BFC in the past but understand if nothing can be sorted, for whatever reason, he'll be gone in the summer.

Just like Keshi

"First and foremost, let's make sure he starts to play really really really really shite..."

Better?

Jordan has been a good player for us and very solid, but I doubt very much that he is the limit of our ambitions at Centre Back.

He and his Agent will have a view on his value and Blackpool will have a view on what options might be available.

He’s not a player that we really need to be paying over the odds for.

He's only our best centre back so far this year... get him away on a free, sound.

I’m sure he will be offered a new contract when the club feel the time is right 100%
In January he can sign a pre contract with another club. He’s already been badly treated by the previous management, if he thinks the club don’t value his services he’ll be away, and I wouldn’t blame him. They were falling over themselves to give Stewart a new contract.

As above ☝ that has nailed the whole debate about him.....

AFAIK, only outside of England, which probably isn't going to be his first choice.

Apart from Josh Bowler where only his agent knew he had negotiated a Renault to drive to the beach and back

MA is right, as soon as the club offers a new contract, JT’s agent will be on the case and you can bet that he’d be testing the water at other clubs. That will distract JT, so it’s the right approach.

JT strikes me as the sort of lad who will continue to work hard, in the knowledge that the club will look after him when the time comes.

I'd get him signed. Pay for somebody you know is proven, rather than someone who isn't, and if you did want proven then you're paying far more than you'd pay JT. If you want unproven, then it's a golden gamble.

As I've said 1000 times, first teamers/viable replacements aren't where the wage budget should pruned but the peripheral players who don't play and were signed on decent wages and, in some cases a fee.

Yet we give utter crocs new deals, sign players who are already injured and don’t embrace and reward a player who has been excellent for us and treated woefully.
Thompson had only played a handful of games for us when Appleton was touting him as the next big thing. No worries that it could stop him continuing to play well there. Personally I’ve seen nothing in Thorniley’s demeanour that would indicate that negotiating a contract might adversely affect his form. Quite the opposite after everything he’s had thrown at him. Unless they’re planning to offer him much reduced terms!

Probably not, but he won’t be on tall money here and if he feel wanted elsewhere and a slight rise in pay he may well go. Don’t forget Cardiff, Swansea are outside England but still the same level of football.

Pretty sure Cardiff and Swansea are governed by the same rules as the English clubs in which case he can't sign a pre- contract for them or any other English club.

I f that’s the case, there’s always the SPL, they’re definitely not governed by the same rules.

But then are Rangers/Celtic likely to be interested, and is anyone else up there going to be paying anything more than we are?

The bigger risk is that he decides to run down his contract, and someone like Cardiff etc are willing to pay him more than we can offer.

Either way, this discussion shouldn’t be taking place, he should be offered a new contract asap. We know what he’s about, it wouldn’t involve a transfer fee, a sigh of relief from Mansford, and whilst I also wouldn’t break the pay structure for him , he’s definitely worth trying to keep.

Neither of us know what discussions have taken place, or are intended to take place, but yes keep if possible.

According to Appleton talks will take place when the time is right, and the time isn’t now, he said. I’m hoping by that he means we don’t need distractions now. I also hope the time will be during the WC break, when there aren’t any distractions.

MA wants Jordan to focus on the here and now. You start contract negotiations then his agent will open the floor up to everyone else. Next thing you know Oxford are promising him a long term mega contract and his minds then set on leaving and joining them.

Assuming that he's telling the truth.
