Yates

The jury is out for me whether Yates is good enough for the Championship and I’d be tempted to give him one more season but I have a feeling he may be sold.

One thing I do feel isn’t helping him though is the few videos this season of him that have been doing the rounds of him absolutely smashed on nights out and there hasn’t just been one.

Yes I know he’s a young lad having fun but he does seem to get in some states and I don’t feel the club would be watching them videos with smiles on their faces and you do have to ask if this has affected his selection at times.

1950'spoolfan proves once again what a grade one nob he is. It's all about himself. He'd rather be proved right than have Jerry Yates score for us.
Our service to our strikers generally is shit

We could have Mitro playing and only scoring half a dozen goal if he got the service our boys get

The simple fact is we set up not to lose with either 2 banks of 4 or a lone striker

Lavery and Yates flog themselves senseless chasing lost causes and long balls

We don't create enough chances

Its that simple

Of course a proven goalscorer (20 a season) is always great to have, but that needs to be considered against how much they usually cost and the budget we have to work within. The biggest issue that has held back both Yates and Lavery this season is the need to play Gaz Mads consistently because we’re soft in the air if we don’t.

I just hope there’s a clear plan that all parties are fully buying into because my fear is we losing value on a player that was worth 7 figures at the start of the season.
I sincerely hope Madine is plan B or even C next season or it will be a tough watch...with a different set up and a more creative midfield then Yates and Lavery could have played a high press and run the channels and forged a meaningful partnership. The only time they were given a chance together was against PNE but the midfield was woeful that night with Virtue and robson on show.

Before anyone suggests they are too similar then I would ask you to watch our games properly and see that Lavery is a poacher in and around the penalty spot and runs the channels whereas Jerry is rarely in the box and prefers to run the channels and cut in from wider positions...they both press extremely well whereas Madine doesnt. It will mean an end to aimlessly hoiking the ball forward for Madine to try and win a foul or fall over.

Personally I think it will be a moot point anyway as Yates will likely leave as he isnt getting enough game time. He has suffered the most from the strange rotation system the manager has employed.

Earlier in the season I thought there was no way Yates and Lavery could play together, they could, but they need the right sort of service. They probably should have had a run of games together at the back end of the season where we could have worked on a way of supplying them effectively.
Instead we persisted with no assists Madine and the long ball. For a target man who allegedly has good hold up play seems odd to me that he hasn't had a single assist this season.

It won't be popular that Phil, possibly fairer to mention that our style helps us concede less, but you are not wrong.

Of course, in AVFTT land when we win 1-0 we are heading to the Champions League and when we lose 1-0 the next game adopting the same tactics against a side of similar ability, we are on our way to the Conference.

The performance today was similar (but worse) that when we watched the Liverpool U23s give us a footballing lesson.
We had several 1st team players playing in that game, but we looked like we'd never played together and were clueless.
The changes Critch made today (for whatever reason) and his tactics, were the main reason Posh embarrassed us. That and the fact the players didn't want to win, didn't want to apply themselves - unlike relegated Posh.
It wasn't much better, in our final embarrassing home game last week.
I agree
Liverpool u23’s performance was a real worry
Beesley looked very very poor
His 2 goals were tap ins but he did little else
In my mind we got the wrong player Charles would have been a better option
IMHO Beesley is not the answer

We're all waiting on tenter hooks for 1950'spoolfans next great prediction.
Remember my prediction in 2015 that Rory would never win another major and all the flak I have received for that one Wizzer,Not gone badly so far after 28 majors without a win would you say. Certainly not an easy or obvious prediction at that time but I had my reasons which so far seem to be spot on.

I also forecast that at the pointwhen Grayson was reappointed as our manager he was the wrong man. Not many disagreeing now!

I got plenty of flak when I suggested after seeing him a few times that Nuttall was a really poor signing. Any at here or Scunthorpe taking issue with that now?

Another I`ve got plenty of flak for is saying England will never win a major tournament under Southgate despite currently having a rich seam of talent,The jury`s still out on that one but I fear i`m going to be right there too.

Finally I came on here first about 10 or 11 years ago because I was horrified at what the Oystons were doing to our club and described them as a cancer in the club, that triggered a torrent of abuse from quite a few on here that were horrified that I could use such a term about them. I wonder where they all are now?

Obviously I`m far from infallible but when you add in my prediction that Yates wouldn`t even score half as many goals as he did last season I`ve not done too badly despite many pouring scorn on many of my posts ,so can anyone point to any major predictions I have made on here that have turned out to be wrong? Many on here wear Tangerine tinted specs and as a result allow hope to override reality.

We`ve had a decent, quite satisfying season this year but calling it great is the wrong use of that word. Next season is very much in the balance as things stand but I`m obviously hoping that we kick on. Our transfer market dealings will play a big part in whether we go forwards or backwards. Let`s hope we get it right.

PS I have also in the past made a few predictions about horse races on here too which have shown a decent overall profit for those who backed them and have personally made a very worthwhile profit in each of the last 5 years including this year for me and only stopped posting them on here due the abuse from that ill informed, opinionated, argumentative, intransigent pillock 20`s (and that one`s a fact not a forecast,) whom exhilaratingly and very satisfyingly I have now exterminated by taking advantage of the wonderful blocking facility on here. Aaah what bliss.

You just can't help yourself can you? It's all about you and your ego. You couldn't give a monkeys about BFC or any other topic. It's all about you and your predictions and how right you say they are. Oh and of course your desire to continually tell us.

Gone a bit quiet Wizzerboy. No pearls of wisdom in response from you?
Been out this afternoon visiting my lads and their partners. Had a cracking afternoon 👍🏻
I return home and lo and behold I get to read a me me me post🤣

Whenever I read one of your posts 50's
I get the Mcfly ditti jingling around in my head..........🎶its all about you, its all about you 50's🎵

So have you ever got anything wrong then?
Sounds like your spot on with everything.

If we're rectifying the creativity in the midfield this summer, he deserves another season to give this division a go.

Big fan of Yates, and for good reason hes a terrace hero.

When I make forecasts on here and the likes of you and and a few others pile tell me how wrong I am and how you know so much better and then the forecasts prove to be correct I don`t think it`s unreasonable given the rubbish I`ve received just to make a point and give some back.

Is my Rory forecast a sore point with you .Probably as you obviously think you`re a much bigger golf expert than me so of course you`ll never admit you`re wrong will you.

I`ve got many many things wrong in life but perhaps less than some on here which is no great claim to fame.

I totally agree that the lack of creativity in midfield is a problem but I`m far from convinced that if that changed at this level Yates has the finishing ability to make the most of the chances created. It`s all just opinions though isn`t it.

A lot of truth there Mark.

In defence of NC he’s been pragmatic in terms of accepting that Madine gives us added solidity in defence is also more likely to be able to compete for balls in the air given that we don’t really have the sort of slick passing quality needed to play into feet or put Lavery in behind.

Solve the issue of defensive frailty against balls into the box and then you can go about finding ways of getting the strikers into the game in ways that suit their strengths. Getting the right sort of loan from a PL club is possibly the answer there unless we can unearth a budget-friendly, quick strong and mobile front man that allows Jerry and Shayne to play around and off him.

The front men whether Yates or Lavery need service, they haven’t been getting any for the majority of the season. Critch needs to sort it out for next season. I don’t think Beasley is the answer either.
yeah who does Critch think he is , what experience has he in football, where's he come from... it's just the impatient and ignorant I'm afraid

Love Jerry, hope he stays, he will know more about what he needs to do next season, the lad bleeds tangerine.

if only we could be like league one bound Peterborough eh?

When you're thrashed 5-0 and your goalkeeper is still Man of the Match, you know you've been well and truly battered...

blackpoolgazette.co.uk/sport/football…

Hazi did you not watch the game?

We could all see from early in the season that there was not much to beat in this league.
We have obviously done well to finish where we have but could it have been a higher position?

Lost to the Nobbers
Lost to Derby
Lost to Peterborough
9 points dropped there.

Beat Sheff Utd away
Beat Fulham home
Beat Boro away
9 points gained there.

What's the phrase? You win some you lose some👍🏻🤷

I forecast last September that Yates was not good enough to succeed in the championship and that he would not get even half the number of goals (18) that he scored in league one last season much to the astonishment of quite a few on here. I was told I was talking rubbish by quite a few .I continued to express that opinion despite receiving much flak by Jerry`s fan club on here who thought I was mad to think he would score less than half his tally last season.

He has ended up with just 8 goals!!! Yes just 8 and that helped by three penalties and don`t give me the sob story about a lack of playing time .He had many opportunities over the season and Critchley rightly concluded like me that as a striker he just wasn`t delivering and so did not deserve to be picked unlike the many myopic football fans on here..

In fact one poster said last September or early October that he would bookmark my forecast and come back to it at the end of the season.

WELL I`M WAITING.
Don't you just love know it alls! That said I'm inclined to agree. We need at least 1 new striker and Jerry sadly has not proved himself at this level.

Swansea Coventry Luton Bournemouth QPR and Boro have all lost at Deepdale.

But yes we could have finished higher if we had turned up to certain games, like the last couple. Hull away 2 points droped, QPR home 2 points robbed, Bournemouth home 3 points given away, Hudds away should have got at least a point. So 75 points was doable But, this is football, it's normal. All teams do this. We got 61 points instead, and this was chiefly down to us being unable to finish teams off and close games out cos we are not quite good enough to do that consistently. Yet.

The idea that we've been shit since the forest game doesn't stand up to inspection does it? We were playing fine up to Barnsley away. It's just those last 2 games that saw us drop off, with experimental line ups and an apparent shortage of motivation particularly at Peterborough. Not a big deal really imo.

I agree with Phil here.

listen to Critchleys post match on how he says we set up as a team. It’s clearly cautious ….presumably for safety in the Championship.

what we have found difficult is letting the shackles come off a bit once we were safe. That’s tactics, selection and also lack of consistent game time for either key players through injury or tactics (with those dropped for tactics suffering a lack of consistency due to stop start section and lack of momentum)

so it’s bit of everything … but flowing from the safety first approach of coach.

Yates suffered more than most as he is a player that only does the job over a season having played game after game. He’s a bit like a Mark Hughes of old.

I have not mentioned anywhere that we’ve been shit have I?

The games I mentioned in that post are games that we COULD have won basically with better team selection that’s all.

Only 13 players in the Championship scored more than 12 goals this season. Most of them are beyond our means. We had had Yates, Madine and Lavery on rotation getting 8-10 each, though, the equivalent of two on 14/15 goals each.

And Lavery's goals mostly came before his injury in October, 7 in 13 games. 3 goals after that. He was on his way to 15-20 goals, maybe more. So maybe next season he will be the individual scorer we need. Let's hope he gets back on track, he's only 23.

Jerry's goal at Huddersfield after two minutes shows what he can do. Quick ball from Bowler into space. JY slots it home from a tricky angle. That might have been the only time this season he was put through like that.
Was thinking this and the only other time I can think of was late on v Derby & possibly at Reading first half by Carey.

For most of the season we haven’t had a midfielder who dribbles forward and plays these types of passes from central areas & our wingers don’t cross it much.

If Yates gets chances he’ll score goals but we’ve adopted a style that’s worked really well this season that doesn’t play to our strikers strengths.

Bang on the money AK.

I thought Jerry would have got into double figures this year but I also thought he would have started most games given his performances last season.

I hadn’t heard of Shayne Lavery and wouldn’t have predicted that Madine would become our first choice striker, although I can see why he became that due to the physicality of the league.

Scoring goals is the hardest thing in football. Jerry is a good player and he’s made some decent contributions at this level, I see no reason to write him off as not good enough.

Who would we get who is better and within budget? I’d rather we focus our attention on creating more chances for the players we’ve got than signing expensive strikers and giving them poor service.

Just been rewatching some old matches…little Martin Bullock into Big John, Sheron and Danny Coid in particular. Bowler was starting to look like our championship level Bullock. Obtaining a reliable goalscorer is indeed the holy grail of football, we’d be mad to let Yates go unless alcohol intake is becoming a performance inhibitor

They beat us 5-0.
JCH was class.....if we signed him then maybe we would score a few more goals.
Madine apart, none of our forward are a handful like he is.
He scored 2 more than gaz goals, 3 more JY and one more than Lavs this season
Hardly pulling up trees is it🤷

The bottom line is, we need to address the supply, the chances created for our strikers. We could sign anyone, but if there's no supply, no someone creating from midfield we are unlikely to score bucket loads. The problem lies in the lack of creativity behind the strikers, rather than with Yates, Madine, Beesley or Lavery.

I'm not sure that the constant rotation helps the strikers at all, Critch needs to decide on his best front two and play them, barring injury. Jerry Yates could be one of those, but he needs to play, regularly.

Think he's also spent a bit of time on the bench. Had a great season with Bristol R and that's why P'boro spent a fair bit on him. He did well last season but there's only so far big bruising centre forwards can go unless they have a bit more to their game.
