Millwall v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 17.09.22

Ahh well, very tough season ahead, really undercooked, no players to bring in who can make a difference, no striker signed.

Injuries don't help amd then weird formations aren't helping either.

Why give a manager a 4 year contract too? Madness. I'm not convinced this football club ownership is something that SS is enjoying that much and probably wouldn't do it again if he could go back in time. An owner these days needs to be absolutely filthy rich with money to spend, I hate that but it is the way of the world.
Maybe we have to accept that the financial limitations mean we are a yoyo club bouncing between league 1 and Championship.

Three poor performances on the bounce, we look like a league 1 side and I think we may well be come May.

Terrible transfer windows and the players don't look like they believe in the tactics they are being asked to play. A horrible next few fixtures, we could be looking for a new manager by the end of October. What are you going to do about it Mr Sadler?

Embarrassing to be honest. So many wrong calls today. It's like we've just been treading water for Gaz to come back. I don't want to see 523 for a very long time.

We got exactly what I expected today, fuck all, I hoped we might scab a point when Patino scored but we sat back and were found wanting yet again.
We seem to have no idea what to do, five at the back isn't working, if that's what it was, really concerned that Appleton knows what to do, or how to do it. Poor in all the areas that matter, all one's that should have been addressed in the transfer window.

We are seriously in the shit

Maybe sort out formation and learn to put at least one player up when defending corners for an outlet that doesn’t cost anything it’s all down to tactics 2nd goal came due to nobody outside the box to stop ball coming straight back at us

10 games played, we have yet to play well for a full 90. The tactics are poor, the football Appleton talks of is just hot air. No organisation and worryingly we are actually getting worse. We need some of our injured players to come back but I'm fearing the worst.

The simple fact is we have too many players who clearly aren’t good enough to be consistent in the Championship, a manager worth no pedigree at this level, and we have lost our only source of creativity in Bowler.

Extremely poor decision making shown today. Some of which has been shown in the final 2 minutes pf the game.

Corbs looks a good player going forward, but sadly his decision making was costly today as there were great opportunities for just a simple pass.

I'm getting increasingly worried from the last 2 performances and just really hope we can turn this around.

On a positive I thought Yates played very well today.

Nothing, with a 4 year contract Sadler can’t afford to sack him.

[Insert Blackpool player] got it wrong too many times today. Millwall were nothing special at all and therefore as the losing team I think we have to be honest and say we must be worse. There’s no leadership on the pitch AT ALL!

I said I would hold off making a judgement on the manager and transfers until some games in. Well that is 10 games now - and I am concerned and I think it will be a slog to finish better than last season. I hope I’m wrong but there’s not enough quality or bite in our play, and no real threat up top without Jerry. Something has to change.

If Liam Bridcutt is the answer....what was the question?!?!?
The whole transfer process has been a shambles, Appleton may be sure Mansford and Bridcutt can come to an agreement, but I'm not. Were the fcuk are the goals going to come from. We've sold our best and most creative player, lost our manager to a Premier League Team, there must have been some money swimming around in the pot,to actually sign players.
Something isn't right, not sure what it is,but if we had a bigger budget and come mid September we are relying on a 33 year old injury prone midfielder to ride to the rescue, we are in trouble.

I've been a supporter of Appy but I can't defend playing five at the back. What happened to 433 attacking football? I still think the players are good enough but they aren't being given a chance with the formation

OK, got the nastiness out of my system. Critchley made our defenders play well. Last season they got to grips with most opponents. So why, this season, are they stood around looking at each other?

I think we have the players to do well. I don't think we have the right manager, the right head of football operations (whatever the bollocks that is), and I think Ben Mansford is completely uninspiring.

Critchley did exactly the same and Appleton has just carried it on.

I thought when Critchley left that there was something not quite right at the club, I am prepared to give Appleton a fair go and he’s been very unlucky with injuries but after these past two performances, considering the transfer window and the apparent reluctance of players to come to Blackpool FC I am once again concerned that it’s not all beer and skittles…

I think this season is going to be a struggle and we cannot stick to that formation. We haven't looked good once playing it so I don't know why he keeps sticking to it. Hopefully when we get some players back and change formation we'll be okay.

Don't agree but I've said it in other posts and I understand your frustration.

We will be sitting comfortably in the bottom 3 by mid October and I doubt very much we will see any change in that come May 😢. Mr Sadler does not have the money to fund a championship team, this has been pretty obvious over the last few transfer windows, wouldn't surprise me to see any one or more of our better players (Jerry and Marv) going in the January window - asset striping preparing for league 1 and much lower budget 🤔

2nd half Millwall upped it and we looked back to useless again. The occasional slick move of the 1st half almost gone.

We aren't good enough to put balls in that are any good, so our play has to come from wingers running.

Corbeanu whilst greedy at times tried stuff, he isn't Josh though.

There's too much pressure on them to make something happen, because we're not good enough elsewhere.

We're not a Millwall side who can go long or play at times.

We're not a good passing side currently, set up in a way that too defensive yet can't defend at times.

We give the ball away cheaply, we clear with headers blindly with no thought to where its going at times.

Just a very poor last 2 games.

I would say we've got more home games to play which will be vital and some big players to return like Madine.

But we haven't looked very good at home either so far.

No need for complete panic bit some worrying signs.

But the window in summer is looking poorer all the time with failure to strengthen the spine of the team and no real goal threat.

We got on top for 20 minutes at the end of the 1st half, kept possession well and scored a really good goal.
We came out for the second half and fell apart.
I do think we played better than we did on Wednesday but it's still a defeat.

Agree, he's been unlucky with injuries but he could be playing his hand better. Got some time now to get his ideas across to the players. He talked a good game pre season he needs to get some 90 minute performances out of them very soon!!

Don't accept that. We had enough to do something across 180 mins. There's no excuse for the players performance on Wednesday and that formation today.

I've seen us lose enough games over 40+ years to take it on the chin, but not when it's self inflicted.

Critchley made our defence play well. Boring but well.
Critchley had the players organised and well drilled. They weren't asked to do what they aren't good at. Appleton just doesn't seem to be getting anything from the squad, it may just be me, but that does not look like a team playing for their manager. That 4 year deal was madness, whoever came up with that needs to look hard at themselves in the mirror.

Like it or not, we are the Barnsley of the league this season. We'll be down there all year, filling a spot in the relegation zone whilst other relegation threatened teams say "at least Blackpool are definitely down."

I'm going to get slaughtered for this but I am probably the only Blackpool supporter who was totally underwhelmed when Sadler bought the club. I didn't think he had thought it through and didn't really have the financial clout behind him to progress the club on and off the field. Anyone was going to be better that the cretins we had owning the club previously and whilst I applaud his efforts and financial input I just don't think he is getting what he thought he might out of it. I think we needed someone who was football orientated, someone who hadn't been a supporter from a young age. Someone who had lots of money to be able to put us in the Championship and allow us to compete financially.

If Sadler can't compete financially and we only really have a decent league 1 budget then we need to know, because we will never push on if we yo yo between the 2 leagues and we also kana how difficult it is to get out of League one once you are in it.

I [robably sound ungrateful, I'm not, it is much better off the field but there are some glaring mistakes being made, particularly around the hiring of managers and then the budget for players.

Something has been wrong since January this year, I can't say what it is, but there is something. This is Blackpool FC nothing ever goes how you want it, but I get the feeling that a bad next few weeks will see us manageress and floundering to find a manager that is any use.

I'm off to sit in my fallout shelter!!
