Blackpool v Sheffield United Official Matchday Thread 29.12.22

A very physical squad with a lot of pace and trickery up top. The same formation as used against Hull could get overrun in the middle and I’m not sure 4 at the back could contain them either. I’d probably ditch the wingers and go with 5 at the back and look to hit them on the break. It means setting up negatively but we need points on the board.

They were having a form wobble when we played them at their place. 7 wins in 8 since and the best away record in the league. But when they have lost it's been against teams who have packed midfield and matched them in numbers (and kept all 11 on the pitch).

We've not played them when they've had Sander Berge in midfield yet. Giant version of Seri for Hull. Doesn't get any smaller the further up the pitch he goes and covers a lot of ground very quickly. Expecting him to be a noticeable difference.

Crunch game for Appleton. A positive result will lift the mood and then you never know. Will it happen? Will it f**k. Sheff Utd and Sunderland will both win comfortably with atmosphere becoming even more toxic.

People will say that’s being negative. I say it’s just being realistic and using form and confidence levels as a guide.

They have another player whose name has slipped my mind, but he has skills that I can only describe as mind boggling. It doesn’t matter how many of the opposition are around him , he always seems to escape their attention. He also has pace to burn . 😡😡😡

Iliman Ndiaye?

Probably for the best that Thorniley did his jogging through treacle thing the other day and has the night off as he wouldn't even get near him in a one on one.

Sheff UTD are punching above their weight, don't see them promoted at the end of the season, easier game than Sunderland for sure. We need a win from these two games just go for it in both.

Can't see it. They'd have to turn into a stripey version of us for the next three months to throw away the advantage they've built up since October.

It's not a strong league but they've got the strongest squad in it where they can name two teams.

they haven't though, Billy Sharp must be knocking 75 years old and Ollie McBummy went 43 games without scoring recently, if he played for us he would of been shot.

They have. The players you've named there are contributing to them winning games. Sharp has come into the team for the injured McBurnie and scored the winning goals in two of their last three.

McBurnie is on 9 for the season same as Yates which isn't too bad for someone who went 43 games without scoring recently. So I doubt he'd be shot somehow.

Of course Sheff U are up there on merit. Really don't see anything but a win for them but I live in hope. On the other hand Sunderland blow hot and cold so if they are not on it, then we've a chance. But Simms and Stewart up front for them does worry me!

As they say, the table doesn’t lie.

Earn yourselves some pennies for the NYE sesh.
Billy sharp to score anytime
A red card
Sheffield utd to win
Pays a cracking 18/1 on bet365 .
If you're feeling brave change result to the pool it pays a massive 110/1 .
Stranger things have happened.

Have they just signed Messi? 😂

At this moment in time, they’re without a doubt one of the best two teams in this league,as stated above the table doesn’t lie,i can’t see anything but a loss i’m afraid.

Play like we did 2nd half at Hull and we've a decent chance of a smash and grab result.
No game for lightweights, except Poveda. I'd like to see him with Patino, Dougal, and DT across the middle.
Beesley and Yates up top with Gaz as an impact sub later on.
Same starting back line as Hull.
Keep it tight, smash and grab - we can do it.

Got Hull outcome correct but this is more challenging. Fairly confident that Jerry will score against the Blades if he can put a bit more cut and thrust in his game. He's long overdue a goal contribution. Scored a couple over there, one an absolute beauty. Need him to get back to that kind of form if we are to get going in the right direction.

So another 1-1 or 2-1 either way. They are a top side in this division but as some have inferred the Pool can lift their game against the better sides. Like at Bramhall Lane in a belting game. Literally.

Pretty sure their lot will think ‘if we score first their crowd will turn’.

We can’t afford for this to happen. True Pool never say die. If we can be the 12th man/woman tonight then let’s do it!

I’ll be watching from Athens and cheering the lads on.

Really need a win but realistically I just can’t see it tonight. Sheff Utd are a good team, would be delighted with a draw and keeping 11 on the pitch for the whole game.

Just read their board and they are going to smash us ,I hope we stuff the Billy Big Bollocks 1-0 . 👍
I imagine the billy big bollocks stuff comes from them having read our board tbh !! I don’t blame them at all for feeling confident. From table, league position, injuries etc. We’d be exactly the same if in their shoes.

We’re due a win but just can’t see it being tonight unfortunately infact I fear it could well turn in be a heavy defeat.
Theres an article in todays Daily mail saying how both Burnley and Sheff Utd are leaps and bounds above every other team in the championship this season and both are heading only one way to the premiership.
Amazing when you think about both our 3-3 draws at their places just where did it all go so wrong? 🤷‍♂️

That’s just a typical Blackpool thing ! My entire life we’ve often done ok against the teams at the top and crap against the teams at the bottom and it doesn’t seem to matter how our season is going. We can be flying high and we’ll still get a beating from the Torquay’s, Yorks and Halifax’s of this world !

How many of the players that gave them a good going-over at Bramall Lane in October are available now?
This was the team:

Maxwell
Ekpiteta 🟨🟨🟥
Thompson 🟨🟨
Thorniley
Connolly
Yates - Goals 30` , 42`
Bridcutt - subbed by Wright 75`
Lavery - subbed byWilliams 82` 🟥(later)
Patino
Dougall - Goal 50`
Madine - subbed by CJ Hamilton 85`

So out of that team, Thorniley and Bridcutt are not available, but now we have Poveda who seems to be in favour with Apps atm

The conclusion I draw is that we need to get Dougall into the side to strengthen the midfield (and remind SU of his last goal), and maybe start Poveda instead of Lavery (who was a damn nuisance to them last time, like he always is. He would be a good later sub).

Just my opinion. Appers will do none of this, but he does know that he can't afford to lose this game. My hope is he'll set out to win rather than draw - it's the Blackpool way. UTMP.

The same Gaz who was our best player v Hull? He will start for sure as he should.

Maybe, but in that case he should smash them early then take a rest once the shithousery is done. High impact for a period of time either at the beginning or the end works for me. Best player v Hull - debatable, he did well as always.

Same again. Interesting. We will definitely concede, we really need Jerry to be on it tonight.
