Angela Rayner

I'm surprised there is no mention of her being investigated by the Police for giving a wrong address of her hereditament.

On second thoughts , no I'm not surprised, as she is not a Tory.😐
The “she’s one of our own” brigade will no doubt be on here shortly mounting a strong deflection defence on her behalf..😉

This is what scares me about Labour, Rayner is not the brightest.

(for the avoidance of doubt, plenty of other Labour and Tory MPs scare me as well)

And what police investigation is this ?

Not heard anything about a police investigation so couldn't possibly comment.

Please could you post details?

The other issues seem to be did she pay:
  • income tax on the rents received from her brother, and;
  • capital gains tax on the disposal of the property?
If not that could be a problem for her.

As requested by a couple of other posters could you please post evidence of this “police investigation”. As far as I can tell what’s happened is that Tory bigwig and renowned tax exile Lord Ashcroft has made some allegations in a book. The book has been serialised in the Mail on Sunday. And off the back of that a couple of Tory MPs claim to have contacted GMP and HMRC.

If that’s right then pitchforks and chants of “Burn the Witch” are a tad premature.

What was it Rishi said about Mob Rule?

Like the Parliamentary Standards investigation into Michael Gove it looks to be a nothingburger.

Potentially tax fraud and election fraud at the same time, that's not a nothing.

Edit to add:

Could also be a parliamentary standards issue, failure to declare member's interest.

Labour policy to increase amount of time you live in a council house before being able to buy it.
#hypocrite
So Zahawi 'forgetting' to pay £1 million plus in capital gains, Hunt 'forgetting' to declare 7 houses and Rees-Mogg offshoring to The Republic of Ireland to avoid paying tax are very similar.

Perspective. We've been fleeced for literally billions and this Wednesday will see the final fling of giving money to their mates while slashing public services.

Majority aren't, who can forget the legacy of Diane 'The Brain' Abbott

Yep, I remember Abbott demonstrating her lack of ability at mental arithmetic, in an interview when not in government.

Recently I heard Laura Trott, being interviewed by Evan Davis, and not being able to grasp the concept of `debt to GDP` and whether it is actually going up or down, and whether this meant there would be any `fiscal headroom` or not.

She is Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

One was laughable but completely inconsequential, and one was rather concerning with a budget coming up...

Didn’t Priti Patel invent a new number system in an interview?

Is there a police investigation? 😉

It would be HMRC who lead on the tax side, presumably someone has (or will) performed a preliminary check of her returns to establish if rental income and CGT has been assessed or not, if not, whether they then want to dispose of this by voluntary disclosure and a contracted settlement, or go to a full enquiry, would be up to the department, the former would be more usual, but in a case like this they might go for the latter.

I’d be glad to never see an old Etonian in a position of ministerial power ever again.
It’s been a shitshow from all those named
I always thought Cameron and Boris did a relatively good job, the latter being let down by poor personal organization and surprisingly poor communication skills.

You've got to be joking. A good job? One lost us billions trying to appease the RWNJs and the other lost us lives through prevarication as well as billions.

The latter was in it purely for personal gain, monetary and ego.

Just flicked through the thread, most of you are as bad as each other!
As long as you blindly support Labour or Conservative as if it were your football team the country will suffer.
We need a whole new way of doing things where the best minds and the best people, left, right and centre work together for the good of the country, and not their financial backers and their own pockets/egos.

Totally, totally agree 👏👏👏

Agreed, there are intellectual dipsticks throughout Parliament

Unfortunately changing the problem is more difficult than identifying it, I have no idea how we change other than possibly boycotting the major party's but that could open the door to even less well intentioned and untalented individuals!
Definitely need to be more cooperative and less adversarial where country and the needs of the majority come first.
First steps would probably be to change the voting system and the House of Lords.
I think us and Iran are the only two countries that have unelected religious leaders having a say in the running of the country!!

Only other country in Europe who has our voting system is Belarus says it all really.
This two party can only win an election is utter shite so you end up with mediocrity.

Red get in then blue and back to red meanwhile all those talented folk from the Greens, social democrats, Liberals etc etc are thrown aside.

Sorry all, I couldn't answer your questions as I've been out all day.
Seen on Yahoo. Angela Rayner could face a police investigation over a council house row after a Tory MP reported her to Greater Manchester Police.
Ms Rayner, the deputy Labour leader, is accused of providing false information about her living circumstances before she sold her former council home.
James Daly, the Conservative MP for Bury North, has written to Greater Manchester Police to demand an investigation after Ms Rayner appeared to give two different addresses in official documents.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Vote Green.

I've studied the PR options vs first past the post (FPTP), and the advantages vs disadvantages of all options are fairly well balanced. FPTP provides for stronger decision making - when the governing party isn't in-fighting. PR is more representative of a wider range of views but it can end up with a Government that pleases no-one.

The ultimate proof of an electoral system is whether it works in terms of government. My view is that the British system has, largely, stood the test of time. Post-war the population massively voted Labour and for five years the people largely went with it. During the 1950s the electorate mainly favoured the Tories. When they fell out of favour (been in too long...a repeating refrain), in the 60s, Wilson came in fresh and largely found favour through to the late 70s. Then Thatcher's principles (well, those of Keith Joseph and Milton Friedman) were massively preferred by the British electorate until her ideas ran out of steam, which ushered in Blair. His New Labour approach was, again, very popular until the last year of Brown. However since then, the Tories didn't gain the full trust of the electorate until 2019. Now they have run out of steam again.

Would PR have served the country better? I don't think so. I'd rather the main parties had the confidence to take on board leading people from outside of their membership. I would love to see Labour take on Caroline Lucas as Minister for the Environment.

So you were moaning about the lack of commentary on a police investigation that doesn't exist? 🤯

Why do you keep going on about the Greens? Your posting history is so anti-Labour and pro-Tory, do you take us all for idiots?

You’re blue, own it.
