Blackpool v Charlton Official Matchnight Thread 20.10.20

Some positives tonight for sure.

Turton played well
Marv done well
Ballard looks an upgrade...quality signing
robson had a good game
Williams had a good game
Mitchell had a poor first half against a very good player and improved second half. (Dougherty will be one of the best in this division)
CJ played much better
Husband wont be playing for a long time

Charlton have looked a decent side and we have played ok even if we rode our luck a bit at times. I think we deserved a point but no shots on target again is shocking...every point dropped at home is a disaster and we simply have to get something on Saturday. The manager will get a bit mor time and deservedly so BUT he is under the cosh now and bottom of the league is horrendous in anyone's book. He needs to get his best 11 on the park week in week out and simply cannot keep chopping and changing forever more. I think Ballard and Marv will be in from now on and I still believe a 3 at the back will help our hapless full backs. If he keeps playing this strange version of 4 3 3 and keeps losing he is toast.
Good post. Disagree about Robson though in respect that his dead ball work as nominated taker has been consistently abysmal.

Disappointing night for sure. Best you can say is that we didn't fold after the disastrous start, an even game but with no goal threat from us. Ballard a big plus. But we have hardly anything going forward as yet. It's dispiriting when the chance of a goal looks so remote. Heads dropping.

Turton played well POOR. SIDEWAYS BALL EVERY TIME.
Marv done well STEPS BACK, UNLIKE CHARLTON DEFENCE NOT FIRST TO THE BALL.
Ballard looks an upgrade...quality signing AGREE.
robson had a good game NOPE. FLATTERED TO DECEIVE.
Williams had a good game AGREE
Mitchell had a poor first half against a very good player and improved second half. (Dougherty will be one of the best in this division) AWFUL. TRULT AWFUL.
CJ played much better OK
Husband wont be playing for a long time SACKED IN THE MORNING

I'm all for positivity and NC is here for the season .... but ... let's be honest. That was a SHITE performance.
Disagree. We actually looked comfortable against 11 men and had little flashes going forward. The substitutions did us no favours other than Ballard obviously.

Once again undone by a ball deep which the full back can't cope with. Must learn from that.

missed how bad dead balls were. poor. poor. poor.

We simply do not look like scoring!
When the 6 minutes board went up, I would normally expect attack attack attack!
But strangely I didn't tonight

The biggest problem as I see it is that considering NC wants us to be on the attack all the time we don't look like we have a goal in us anywhere in the team, and we inevitably concede.

The team look like a bunch of strangers tonight, it's like they are really struggling with the tactics even after an improvement on Saturday.. I still think it's a massive work in progress, but we look a lot worse at home than we do away. Charlton have been much the better team even when it was back to 10 v 10.
You’ve changed your tune all of a sudden.

Agreed - in addition our set piece play is truly woeful. What do they do all week !

Disappointingly more full back mistakes ( granted he improved ) and an obvious lack of a goal threat. Surely Kemp has a creative spark in him. I just don’t get Lubala, several players are severely lacking in confidence.

But therein lies the issue, we have players incapable of learning, it is the same mistakes every week. Mitchell is not a defender, Critchley doesn't have a clue as far as I can see. Where is our goal threat, what is that UEFA coaching license worth? Poor substitutions, poor defensive organisation, poor set piece delivery, the list goes on.

Tonight the positive was actually our effort, Ballard and MJ were immense. It was clear where their threat came from and our elite coach failed to do anything, whereas Bowyer nullified CJ.

For a game where we were down to 10 men from the 1st minute on that wasn't as bad as it could've been.

However, the overall result and performance are incredibly worrying. Charlton were absolutely the better team even when they were reduced to 10 men.

We defended quite well for the majority of the game, giving them no real clear cut chances but Charlton's goal was taken quite well and I wouldn't chalk it up to an individual error, but rather a moment of individual brilliance from Charlton.

The main concern for me has to be in attack. If we go the entire game with only having 1 shot on goal at home we are going to be all too easy to beat.

Don't think it's a personnel issue, it is 100% down to Critchley. He has more than enough attacking players at his disposal, but just doesn't seem to have implemented a coaching plan to get the players to play the way he wants them to play.

I am solidly in the camp of giving him time to develop the squad, but there have been little improvements going forward as the season's gone on and if we can't create chances we are going to be easily beaten by teams like Charlton.

I think Critchley's inexperience as a full time manager is really starting to bite him in the ass and the fact that we're bottom of the league shows that.

We try,we're just no good at it. Last minute Hamilton plenty of time on the ball and just tries to dink it in. Cleared by first defender.
Yes, got to be better in wide positions and dead ball delivery. At the back we always look like conceding from a cross or dead ball.

I think it is starting to get worrying. I still think we will be fine but it may take half a season and we could be well adrift by then. If things don't improve and we get relegated then I don't envy Sadler, he will be very unhappy but realising that it isn't an easy gig. The trouble is, if we lose NC then whoever comes in won't want the majority of his players so off we go again. When we did well we had some really astute signings, particularly identified by Tony Parkes and then by Ollie, and he was able, with Thommo to turn a band of misfits into the most exciting team I have seen, Charlie, Keith & Vaughnie in midfield, GTF, DJ and Brett or Dobbie up front. We haven't got a player that can hold a candle to any of them.

It's desperately disappointing. I don't really think it was a mistake by the defence that lost us the game tonight.
All the mistakes are higher up the pitch.

We just need some bloody luck ! The ball is just not bouncing for us at the moment, but it will turn, there’s an old saying, the harder you work, the luckier you get , and we do work hard .

Everyone looks a decent side against us.

Every game is Groundhog Day.

Finally it seems some of NC's most vociferous supporters can see the bleeding obvious. Whatever Simon Sadler decides - things need to change and fast.

If we continue to be utterly toothless, devoid of ideas and mistake riddled we will soon find ourselves rooted to the foot of this difficult division.

It seems to me that this "long term plan" needs some "short term rethinking" before we sink without a trace before Christmas.

Not being able to score goals is the starting place.

Did well to stay in the game while it was 10 v 11 and got the luck to even up the numbers but the lack of goal threat is so obvious.
