Blackpool v Everton Matchday Thread 24.07.22

Well 2 things to get sorted out:
A RB and a LB.
High press. Critch had a well drilled high pressing system, despite the infamous defensive aproach of a 4-4-2. Those 3 upfront need to provoke errors more often.
Appy said something on the line of "we're working on attacking and having possesion but Leeds, rangers, and Everton Will not let us have it" but You need to be able to win the ball back pretty often if You want to play attacking possesion football.

Jerry and even Lavery always press, you need to force errors, surely they know this.

second half better. upped the pace somewhat, prolonged spells of pressure. Overall not a convincing performance, but a few players had reasonably good games. still not sure we have any recognisable formation though that suits the players.

Much better 2nd half. Unfortunate with the 2 goals conceded. Some better finishing by Fiorini and Bowler plus better quality free kicks and we could have drawn level. Anderson was a bit disappointing for me and needs to up his game.

Did well considering we've thrown Williams in at the deep end.

My stream had Everton commentators and even they were complaining about the linesman in their offside goal.

Fiorini has not had a pre-season prior to joining us, so will still be a bit rusty. Even then he's showing signs of quality.

Second half excellent at times. Fiorini looks a good addition and showed his pedigree I thought. Bowler was terrific in bursts. The Jack Moore through ball that wasn't picked up on was class. Lots of decent performances in fits and starts throughout the team and augurs well for the long slog ahead.

Agree Fiorini got all the hype after a very average performance against Salford. Reminds me of a shit David Fox. Plays the ball sideways only, too lightweight, and wasted some good opportunities. Not as good as Carey

Just watched the 4th goal again. The lack of closing down by Anderson and Garbutt is painful.

Overall, not bad with the ball, we seem to be better at getting it forward through the lines than last season but defensively we're miles off with this shape with these players.

Garbutt with Anderson, CJ or Lavery in front of him just isn't going to work. I don't know what's happening with that Irish lad but I'd like to see Moore start on Tuesday. Williams had a good start in a makeshift defence.

A bit like Tuesday; good bits, bad bits.

I know Dougall only had a 10 min run out, but consistently played with his back to goal meaning his only route was back passing.

Liking the young lad Moore, but he needs to sit in a room with Bowler and together work out when and where to pass to each other, as I think they are onto a decent partnership if they can sync their thoughts.

Connoly, as per usual played with grit , he’s going to be our Mr. Dependable this season.

Getting Marv back in the back four is an absolute must.
pre season or not we looked over exposed and shaky at the back and all at sea at times.

Being on the wrong side of 50 now, I cannot stand a full season of living on the edge every time the opposition stream forward.

Many have said, some positives to be taken, but still , a little worryingly several more negatives floating around.

Not seen thd game. But we need a stronger defence out asap. Gabriel and Husband fit, and Marv back to partner Williams. Those two will need games together to familiarise too. Selecting Virtue ahead of Dougall is a bit worrying, and i reckon we will likely shift to two holding players at some point in the first ten games. I dont know what to do about the forward line. Need at least one new face I think?

Garbutt is getting pelters again despite a) only just getting over an injury and b) being in the exact same situation as at the start of the previous season where we’re playing without a RWB and as a result are lop sided yet again. Garbutt is at his best when playing in the same squad as Gabriel. Tactics and teams require balance in order to be effective. We’re not in that position yet.

In the words of Dyatlov

‘Not great, not terrible’

Some good passages of play at times for us, but too much respect given in the early phases of both halves. A few pleasing performances (new signings, Bowler, Moore, Connolly), some average ones and a couple of weak ones (Keshi and Garbs).

If we get Gabriel, Jimmy and Marv back to the first team soon we will be ok for the start of the season with opportunities to strengthen before window closes.

Virtue had another decent game. Carey struggled but got into it in the final half-hour.

Kenny has to be careful. That pivot position needs to be used to get the ball forward in this formation and he's got a mindset of square and back atm. I don't think we're struggling in midfield though, there's more pressing problems elsewhere.

Fiorini must be the tea boy at city nowhere near as good as what we already have
I thought Fiorini looked good. He's comfortable playing box to box, creative, and defends well. A bit raw, but Prem sides punish you more for that than do Championship sides. Who else do we have who plays like him? Carey is great but much more of a forward player. Dougall much more of a defensive player. Anderson loves going wide and doesn't do much defending. Kev is the only other one I can think of who works the entire center of the pitch with skill at both ends.

Good second half. Bowler our best player. Not just hugging the line any more; balls across midfield, curlers into the left hand side of the box. I just hope he isn't trying to put himself in the window.
