From the Birmingham Post.
Expect changes when West Brom make for the seaside this weekend.
Sam Allardyce has already indicated that he intends to offer his ‘other players’ a run-out when Albion take on Blackpool in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday - that means that for some players, it’ll be their first start, or first involvement at all, since the club’s Carabao Cup campaign ended back in September.
We’ll know more about exactly which players Allardyce will, or will not, have at his disposal when he sits down with the media for his virtual press conference on Thursday afternoon. Sam Field and Hal Robson-Kanu, for example, haven’t been seen for quite some time and both will be hoping to offer Allardyce extra options.
For Sam Johnstone, Semi Ajayi, Matheus Pereira and the like, cup football could mean a breather before the Premier League resumes with a trip to Molineux the following Saturday.
How might Albion line up? Who is likely to be granted an opportunity they must seize?
Charlie Austin
Austin hasn’t started a league game this term, but he has had the odd run-out recently. Indeed he had half chances against Liverpool and Arsenal recently during what was a miserable festive period for Albion.
He didn’t have any luck against Harrogate Town in the second round of the EFL Cup, but he did dispatch his penalty with a degree of authority as Albion exited the competition at the hands of Brentford in a shoot-out.
Austin was, after all, the club’s leading goalscorer last season and his immediate future is uncertain with interest in his services understood to be coming from elsewhere.
This weekend, though, he will likely have a chance to put the Tangerines to the sword.
Rekeem Harper
Young midfielder Harper has been champing at the bit, waiting for an opportunity to stake a claim for more regular minutes in recent weeks and months.
Asked by BirminghamLive not too long ago about his plans for the academy product, former boss Slaven Bilic hinted that he may have been open to loaning Harper out to a Championship side in January. We’ll have to wait and see what Allardyce’s plans are for him, but Harper did make an appearance from the bench against Arsenal - and tested Bernd Leno.
He is likely to take up a position in the midfield at Bloomfield Road.
Filip Krovinovic
It could be a big month for Krovinovic, who will be hoping to have a part to play under Allardyce. A player who Bilic pushed hard for in the summer, the Croat has had only 18 minutes of football under the new management - they came when the Baggies were five down to Leeds.
Krovinovic could conceivably end his loan this month if all parties deem it the best course of action, and be loaned out elsewhere; Nottingham Forest are admirers, and they’re after Kamil Grosicki once again. There’s interest in Krovinovic from Greece, too, though he’d likely not want to give up his Premier League opportunity so soon.
Kyle Edwards
Harper’s academy counterpart Edwards hasn’t had as much of a role in recent weeks. Admired for his abilities by Bilic, he hasn’t been seen since the defeat to Tottenham two months ago, through a mixture of coronavirus and competition.
Edwards, like Allardyce from Dudley, has been linked with a loan move to Celtic this month, and with Robert Snodgrass coming through the door, competition in the wing department of the squad just became a little stronger.
Still, he could be involved here against League One opposition.
Cedric Kipre
Like Harper, Kipre could also leave this month on a loan basis. Having played two full matches in the Carabao Cup, the summer signing hasn’t been seen since; indeed he often struggles to make the match-day squad these days.
The Ivorian, bought with an eye on the long-term future, has been linked with Blackburn - who lost out to Albion in the summer - and with Allardyce seeking defensive reinforcements, Kipre could make way in the meantime.
For now, though, he will likely get a run-out as he returns to Lancashire.
