Blackpool v West Brom Official FA Cup Matchday Thread 09.01.21

Saving pens has nothing to do with height, reflexes yes.

You're telling me someone like Walker, at 6'6, taller and with a longer reach than Maxwell, doesn't have an advantage? Especially with the new ruling of having to keep a foot on the line as the penalty is taken?

And of course reflexes also play a massive part. And decision-making.

Just come down of the ceiling great win. I've seen criticism of Kemp Turton & Lubala personally I think Kemp did quite well before he faded, Turton is improving & was a bit unlucky conceding the pen but put a fantastic ball in for Yates to scuff with his thigh & Lubala's assist, just get behind our players.

Were you around when Ron Springett was goalkeeper?
Think he was only 5 ft 10 yet capped for England.
They nicknamed the “flea” as he had a very powerful thrust
Ironic to be named Springett!

I wasn't! But yeah, talk about nominative determinism with that last name.

It was more of a general observation and of course there are always exceptions. I watch a bit of NBA and every now and then you get a sub six footer who can dunk comfortably, for example, which is a bit of a loose comparison - all about the power generated in the leap. When I played in secondary school / college, I couldn't, and I'm just over six foot.

Anyway, Maxwell showed he is more than capable and makes up for not being the tallest in other areas. I thought that save in ET was brilliant, ball curling away from him along the ground at pace - to get down and open his hand up and palm it up and over strongly enough: great save. And the pen saves speak for themselves.

Eddie Hopkinson Bolton & England keeper was even smaller at 5’8” Our very own Sir Harry Thompson was only 5’9”

Harry Thomson and John Burridge were under 6' tall and it didn't hinder them.
Yes, Ron Springett and Alan Hodgkinson both relatively short but played for England.
Height can help but there are other attributes, like agility and calmness under pressure.

there is a lot of talk about the pen, and only being a pen under current guidelines, but surely that would have been a def pen under any guidelines, at least as far as I can remember in 45 years of watching Pool.

Looking at how that person is going to take the pen helps.

Well played Blackpool, I think you deserved to win in 90 mins and in extra time. We are a massive shambles. I thought every one of your players were excellent.

Good luck for the season and the next round.
Cheers.

Any truth in the rumour that Baggies fans have set up a petition to get rid of Fat Sam and that Villa fans have also set one up to keep him! 🤣

It's easy when you're not playing isn't it? Kemp will come good. Lubala, jury's out.
I like Kemp. He's got an eye for a pass, as in our second goal. He was maybe unlucky not to score our first too. I think Bez was playing him in and it fortunately ended up at Jerry's feet.

I think someone else has said this but once Kemp knew he wasn't getting there, he kept his feet away so that the player behind him could do it. Now, that might sound good but when you realise the speed of thought needed to do that, it's pretty awesome. I think it was Alan Hansen who once said (on MOTD), that he couldn't be a striker because of the speed of thought needed in the box.
