Blackpool v West Brom Official FA Cup Matchday Thread 09.01.21

So we got to round 5 even if we don't win round 4 🙄
I think so.
Agree with all of that although I would still criticise our defence for the two goals we conceded. Simple headed goal with no challenge and yet another stupid penalty. WBA didn't look like scoring otherwise.
Hubby challenged for the header from the corner but Ajayi is a big lad.
The penalty was a handball under the current guidelines and I don't think VAR would have overturned it. Can't really blame Turts too much.

Fantastic performance and result, thoroughly deserved. Considering the level of opposition and the fact we were without our main creative outlet in Hamilton, it can't be underestimated the level of our performance.
To pick out a few points:
1. Ward was outstanding. It's taken him a while to get going for us but he's been gradually improving all season and I'd go as far as saying him and Dougall should be able to dominate most midfields in league one. He took some stick when he first signed but he's a great example of how perseverance and hard work can reap dividends.

2. The question "what is Virtues best role" has been answered - and it's not in a defensive holding position.

3. Mitchell looked a lot more determined when he came on than when we've seen him previously. I think he could still be a big asset.

4. I'm amazed aanyone thought the penalty was harsh. Indicating cyclists don't raise their arms as much. As clear a pen for handball as you'll ever see.

5. Yates and Madine worked well together...... again.

6. If I can be nitpicky, we still make bad choices so often when in good positions, and on set pieces we don't attack the ball with any aggression. A large part of our problems this season are mental rather than technical. Also, despite Maxwell being the hero of the day, he does take a long time to come off his line. I'm really being picky after such a great result but just my opinion.

7. Lubala was decent. I think it's difficult to judge when a player has basically been a bit part but I think there's potential there.

8. Critchley got his lineup and subs spot on I thought. Also, I know he's a wealthy man but I'm pleased that SS has another significant cash injection through these difficult times. It really must be costing him a fortune right now.

Last point - it was nice of the commentators to keep mentioning how "Athletic and determined" we were, despite the fact that the only two goals that displayed any kind of creativity, flair and invention came from us.

Great day, in the hat for round four after knocking out an Allardyce managed Premier league club. Superb.
Agreed. Only Kemp disappointed. I've seen enough to say he should go back to West Ham. For me, Lubala is still some way off being a first teamer. Well done Critchley and players.

The fat gravy drinkers musings.....

ALLARDYCE ON EMIRATES FA CUP DEFEAT AT BLACKPOOL

20 minutes
Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce was frustrated to see his side bow out the Emirates FA Cup at Blackpool on Saturday.
The Baggies were beaten 3-2 on penalties by the Sky Bet League One side after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
Allardyce said: “When our goalkeeper saves the first penalty, which was a fantastic save, I think we should have shown the nerve to win the game from there.
"He couldn’t have done a better job than to give us the boost we needed. But unfortunately the quality of our penalties after that was not of the right quality to win us the game.
"The battle was always going to be tough. I saw exactly how tough it was going to be by Blackpool using their assets, playing off big Madine up front, who causes a problem and we have to battle in that area.
"But the most disappointing thing for me was that the goals didn’t come from that area, they came from our lapses in concentration. Both their goals were getting through the middle after we gave the ball away.
“But we came back from it. Was it a penalty? I’m not sure. Some people seem to think it was, some think it wasn’t, I have not seen it back. That gave us a great opportunity to win the game at any stage.
"We couldn’t do that in 90 minutes or extra-time, but we had a great opportunity to win it on penalties and that’s because we went 1-0 up on penalties after Button saved the first one for them, and we failed in that department today."

To be fair to 62, he posted once earlier in the thread and there was slight positivity. Even nuance. Been a real turn up for the books today!
We never saw him again.
definitely not a real Pool fan - how could you not cheer that performance on?

Same as the politics board lot - if we were playing Brexit FC or a team of teachers they’d swamp this thread.....

Kemp is a strange one, because I don't think he's a bad player. But he just doesn't seem any better than what we've got, which means it's a waste of a loan slot.
Lubala has potential, but needs a run of games. The thing is, we need results now!

Needless corner to allow the opportunity for their first. To be fair, not much communication going on.

No argument with that. Neither would help to push us up into the play off positions. I think we still need a couple in with creativity and goalscoring in mind.

Arguably the same as Woodburn. Always a problem with Prem loan players - KDH and Ballard are the sort of players you need who will make an impact rather than use the opportunity for experience.

Think with loans you have to ask would you miss them if they weren't here. Woodburn no, Gabriel no, Kemp no Ballard yes. Thats not suggesting they are poor but can we do better? The answer for me is yes.

With Critch leaving Kaikai out at Bristol after his head went from conceding a penalty, then I hope he gets over missing one as well. He can be a match winner and it seems his head may be the problem.
When Chizz said it was Kaikai next I thought, he'll miss - and he did. But you're probably right. He needs a bit of support, with an arm around the shoulder,

If we had lost today,I would of been so depressed,we were by far the better team, about time we beat Fat Sam,was dreading them stealing it like he did with West ham at Wembley.

We never saw him again.

Not fair Chunky. There are loads of us on the politics board who are Seasiders through and through.

Match report here kids. Still buzzing!

Brilliant that td - captures the mood exactly. I'm still buzzing too at 20.23!

How do you produce these reports so quickly? I imagine you have a meerkat servant called Sergei who, during the game, types rapidly to your dictation. 😄

You mentioned at one point that the sky was a purple backdrop. Not good enough! According to Master Wordsmith, the Chizzmeister, it was puce, to which Brett responded, "Puce, what's that? We don't have that in Blackburn". 😂

So.

Annoyed at the first goal, i think it comes from Maxwell being rooted to his line so we concede the corner. If he claims it, which he should have done, that doesn't go in.

Our second goal was a thing of beauty. The passing and moving was top notch; the finish suggests Madine is playing with loads of confidence.

I was really pleased to see us shoot a lot more, I think they've been told to have a crack. I like it because it gives the defence something else to think about. Only once did I think we should have passed it to a better placed player.

I hope this is the standard we play to for the test of the season because we've got a chance to so something special. I fear it won't be though. It's probably the PL scalp influence sadly.

I've not seen the other 9 penalties as I headed to the kitchen after we missed the first.

Just checked my Fitbit app for my heart rate during the penalty shootout.

Had a massive peak almost double my regular resting heart rate when Maxwell denied them for the 2nd time 😂

Dont care who I upset...

Turton is nowhere near good enough for a side with aspirations to go up

Lubala was abysmal apart from his assist

Ward was fantastic...Madine superb

Use of subs again very very poor...they brought 4 on to rescue the game...should have been Virtue earlier (he has done well) and Kai kai much earlier...kemp wasnt great and Lubala was very very poor bar his assist
I seem to agree with a lot of your posts and said exactly what yousaid about Turton, but I was impressed with Lubala although mostly his all round energy and defencive work.didnt think Kaikai gave us anything again.

Its all subjective ...I thought Lubala was a passenger despite putting the effort in...he made the goal but gave away a very poor foul when he ran 50 yards chasing their player. They crossed it got the corner and then scored...it was a bad free kick to give away. I want him to do well but he has only done it in the joke cup thus far and looks too green to do himself justice. It looks a lack of technique rather than effort...polar opposite of Kai Kai. The less said about Turton today the better but he was on the winning team so that will do for me.

Ward Maxwell Madine Dougall all excellent today

I agree,TTP, I have given Ward a bit of stick on this board, but today I thought he played out of his skin. Hopefully this is the sign of things to come, if so we have got ourselves one hell of a player. Well done everyone.👏👏👏👏
