Deadline Day Thread

Matt O'Riley is another tidy midfielder but not for me, whoever comes in needs to be better than what we have. We are clearly extending our search for a central midfielder, which always makes me wonder why we have left things so late in the summer window.

Sheff United signing Connor Hurihame is a strong signing. Then Rhys Williams going to Swansea.

Andre Gray was lethal just a couple of seasons ago.

This O'Riley story at least shows we are still looking.
Sounds like one for the devopment squad tbh.

Exactly my thoughts. We currently have nobody who looks massively confident to have their foot on the ball in midfield. I fear we’ve left it too late, if we don’t bring one in it’ll be a big mistake.
If we play 4 2 3 1 and have Stewart, Dougall or Wintle playing as the holding 2 then maybe Carey or Anderson could play as the central attacking midfield player.
If that is the case we probably need another wide attacking player as Mitchell is injured and Hamilton out of form.
Maybe the lad from Crewe is a cheaper and more available option than the bloke from Oxford.

If our business is done then I am still quite happy, solved the RB problem by bringing in two quality players, didn't get Brannagan or Dale, but they'll be available in January.

10/10 window for me.
Not 10/10, we've made some good signings who may go onto be great signings.

Overall a good window but not perfect, were still after that mid so we clearly think that's what we need.

The best thing about this window is that the players we have signed are good signings and the players we’ve been knocked back on are also good players.

gone are the days where nothing would happen as we “wait for January when all the best talent is available at a fraction of the cost”

Whilst our 2 signings this morning are excellent and solved our RB problem, we are certainly short in midfield in terms of both attacking quality and physical presence (made worse by injuries). It has been obvious to all of us that we were lacking there from the beginning of the summer / window. I am just surprised that we have left it until the last day of the window to try to address this. Also need another striker for me

I agree, right back is sorted and I think we will get Simms in January so a really great window, but we really do need a midfield playmaker unless the lad from Crewe steps forward, which he could do and I really like Carey. Maybe the way forward is Dougall and Stewart sitting behind Anderson and the play 3 up front, Perm any 3 from Yates, Lavery, Madine, JJT, Bowler, Mitchell or CJ. We have cover everywhere but the only place I would like to see someone is the creative midfield spot.

It's Carey for me let him loose as he’s an outstanding talent!

If we capped the night off with Owen Dale I'd be quite chuffed. He would address a need (wing/forward depth) while also being an exciting young prospect for the future.

Not as big of a coup as Brannagan, but still addresses a need and is quite sought after.

Would have liked to have gotten another CM through the door, but Stewart, Dougall, and Wintle (and maybe a cheap free agent) will have to do until January when we will probably go in for Brannagan again.

How good is dale meant to be? Good on the ball attacking?

22 year old winger (who can play on either side but prefers RW) who scored 11 and assisted 2 in League 1 last year.

Really came on strong towards the end of the season and if he had played like he did in the second half for the whole season he'd probably be going for 7 figures easily.

A good, young, attacking player that will add a lot to the squad (also scored a great bicycle kick last year.)

Won all of Crewe's seasonal awards last year, a real talent IMO.

Was wanted by Blackburn too.

Would definitely class this as an "exciting talent"

Also think it's worth mentioning Crewe put a higher price tag on Dale than they did for their other prized winger (who they sold to Charlton), Charlie Kirk, which tells you all you need to know about how they rate him.

Yeah few seemingly Crewe fans in that twitter comments not sure if bitter he might be going or genuine but some not full of praise...

Seema quite a lot of this sentiment....

Crewe fans are obviously going to say bad things about him, because he's forced this move through.

Any objective analysis would suggest that this a a cracking signing.

Clearly sour grapes if he’s scoring and assisting at the rate he did last season at the age of 21/22…how could they possibly conclude he’s not Championship material at that age?
Dunno, only reading whats said and usually teams like Oxford are desperate not to lose them, here they seem happy.

They're bitter about his perceived behaviour, as he's been missing from the squad since the speculation of his move became general knowledge.
Charlie Kirk, who I thought was excellent, went to Charlton and yet this lad is wanted by more than one championship club apparently. So it's exactly the kind of player we should be going for. 22 years old and Crewe don't produce bad youngsters. With Critchley coaching him for 12 months I'm confident he would do well for us, even in the championship. Don't forget that some players flourish with better players around them too.

Yeah I trust that the manager and staff know what they are doing, just had a flick through and didn't see a single positive, which was unusual but didn't know he's forced an exit.
