Edward Colston statue toppled in Bristol...

You might be being somewhat over-sensitive...
But even so, it’s quite unintentionally hilarious, given the topic of the thread. 🤗
Perhaps but I think there's little doubt that there are some on here who would have taken great pleasure with their comments if they had got there before me with the realisation of it.

Absolutely new to me that explanation. I wouldn't for one moment think that anyone using it would be aware of that.

I saw it, was aware of the 'possible' reference and chose to ignore it... It's a phrase which is commonly used, nobody uses it in a racist context, the claimed origins are dubious in any case.

Wow, take down a statue and all of a sudden the history associated with the person disappears - completely!
What rot.

Every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”‬

‪George Orwell, 1984‬

He died before 1984.

Alright, point taken. But what Orwell was doing was showing how a society that becomes completely under the thrall of the State machine (the USSR was his model) can reinvent the truth.
Of course, that is an authoritarian nightmare but back in our liberal democratic Motherland I do not believe the toppling statues is a danger to out understanding of history. Yes, retain the statues but in a museum environment where the past can be explained in context.

I see the MailOnLine mentions that some Blackpool, Cardiff & Millwall fans are expected to turn up in London on Saturday to protect the statues.

Right, I've had a heads up regarding an unfortunate phrase I used in my post of which I had no idea of the origins. Typical that it's so current.
I've duly edited my post replacing the offensive phrase and apologise if any one noticed it and realised it's meaning.
Thanks to the poster for informing me.
I did smile to myself. Ironic.

I lived in Bristol for a while

Every time I went past the bust of the black poet Alfred Fagon in St Pauls I felt sick.

This statue was a personal affront to my heritage.

I'm thinking of going back to Bristol, throwing a rope around it, pulling it down and chucking it in the harbour.

Will the police be ok with this?

Well! My post on Monday was prophetic but hardly rocket science.

It was obvious someone was going to do a tit for tat, and while Mr Fagon is still in situ, he's a bit worse for wear.

An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind!

Are we all ready for the National disgrace of a press to blame far right thuggery on handing a few bedwetters their arses tomorrow. I see Kahn has already started the bullshit mind games before it has even begun.

1) Attack police officers And tear down historical monuments ( Peaceful protesters )

2) Defend historical monuments and back the police ( Far right thuggery )

The worlds gone mad, never in my life would I of thought we would of had to protect the cenotaph and Sir Winston Churchill’s statue from people supposedly against Facism. you Couldn’t make it up.

Statues have all been boarded up overnight and the demo in Hyde Park brought forward to confuse the DFLA

An eye for an eye?

One is the removal of an offensive statue, which celebrates the very worst aspects of British history the other is an act of pure racism by thick heads.
