While I don't think we should settle for second best, I think we need to take a step back sometimes. We were in unchartered territory for England in the euros, and did far far better than we normally do. The players performed, but just fell a little short at the end. I agree with someone's earlier comment that it's in our nature to look for something to blame, but maybe it's less about anything we did wrong and more that Italy just have a better team right now with the belief that a three year run brings (think 'pool in 2010 where I felt we could've beaten anyone to win promotion). It's all ifs and buts. We could've been more adventurous but that might've meant losing in 90, we just don't know. GS will have learnt a lot last night, as will the players.
Also, a lot has been made of home advantage and how we'll never get a better chance - something I disagree with. Since 1980, Italy, Germany, England, Portugal and France have all hosted the euros and not one has won while hosting (France won in 1984 but didn't while hosting in 2016). It isn't easy to win a home tournament. Brazil didn't win the world cup while hosting in 2014, and Germany didn't win the world cup when they hosted in 2006. In fact, whenever a footballing 'heavyweight' hosts a major tournament, more often than not they don't actually win it.
Before this tournament i'd have said it's unlikely i'll ever see us win something, but now i'd say these players do have what it takes. They were all excellent, and I hope they remember this disappointment and use it as motivation at the World cup. I liked our players reactions actually; they didn't just look disappointed they were visibly annoyed/angry at losing imo. That's how you should be if you want to win things. Can't wait for the world cup now.
