An antiquated, unnecessary adjunct to our liberal democracy. What purpose does the Queen serve? She is the equivalent of a flag, an anthem with no real powers. Yet, she dabbles in politics to keep her wealth out of the news. Also she keeps very dubious company with the Sultan of Brunai holding more wealth in this country than all readers of this board put together. And yet, he keeps his daughter prisoner.
It's about time we rid ourselves of these leeches.

The Queens private estate invested millions of pounds into offshore tax havens.
A significant portion of her estate was also invested in Bright House, a company that in 2017 were ordered to pay back £15 million to 250,000 customers consisting of the impoverished, disabled and mentally ill. All of these customers were judged to have been blatantly financially exploited by Bright House.
Your taxes contribute towards practices such as these. These are two of the many examples of ridiculous situations we find ourself in as a country under an archaic, regressive monarchy. Tremendous ambassadors of the country and envy of the world? Wake up.

I don’t share the extreme views of the o/p.
I’m more middle ground on this debate.

The Monarchy needs modifying, modernisation, streamlining and a lessening of a burden on the taxpayer. The option to be mainly self sustainable is achievable with the Windsor family wealth.
However, I would like it to be retained in a lesser format, after the above is achieved.

And finally, this subject and the way the o/p has been so scathing and unbalanced in their left wing views - is sadly one of the many reasons why an extreme left, and extreme right politically... Still exists.

I do have hope that the extremists (on BOTH sides) start to turn more people into being politically “neutral” balanced, middle ground takers, whatever way you wish to describe it... but anything other than a far right, or far left extremist mindset - I can’t think of anything more ignorant and intolerant political view wise. These types are usually sneering, abusive and almost impossible to have an adult debate with.
 
I find the whole concept a bit odd in the 21st century.
If I were to say to anyone on here are some peoples children more worthy than yours from the moment they are born to the day they die, irrespective of their conduct or achievements, they would almost all say no. But if I say those people are the Royal family, then, if they are Monarchists, they have to concede that their own children are lesser mortals.
Not for me.
A strange part of the should we get rid debate is that people always suggest really shit people as alternative heads of state.
Is the UK so devoid of decent, admirable people that we cant find candidates to do the job for 4 or 5 years?
We might also get a decent national anthem if we lost the Royals, if they must stay keep GSTQ as their song but can the people of England not have a better one!
 
Yes let's all have Blair/Brown/Cameron/May/Johnson as head of state couldn't think of anything worse Trump mania written all over it.
Wasting your times with these debates they thankfully are going nowhere last opinion polls 62% wanted to keep the norm and only 22% for a Republic.

As the majority of people in the UK think that some people are born to be better than others then we should keep them, but do we have to say they work hard and do we have to have so many of them, and do they really need to take more money from the state?

I’am Proud of our Royal Family apart from the Yank & Ginger that is they bring in millions of pounds to the economy and to local businesses, many of the homes/grounds they own are open to public viewing I mean who’s never visited the Tower of London?

HM the Queen was on the throne when I was born and that was 60 odd years ago so I take my hat off to her.

There’s a lot worse Leeches out there that contribute absolutely nothing at all to our country.

Britain has had a Royal family for a thousand years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future so it’s a 👍 from me, yet another thing in this country we can be proud of. 🇬🇧 👑

Remind me what the Queen's second son has done to make you proud... I have more respect for Harry and Meghan than that liar and perv.

Aa it happens, I have no issue with the monarchy, but there is more than their fair share of free loaders and outright dodgy people in there.

Its easy to start singling out individuals but where do you stop?
Yes Andrew hasn’t been a beacon of light but neither was Charles and neither was Diana, neither was Princess Margaret and Fergie what use has Edward been?
All my praise is for HM the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh yes of course they have families and they have families as they all have a life too.

It was the reference to pride in them all. I agree the Queen is a steadying influence. Pity about the rest.

This is in large part a good argument against a hereditary Royal family, a lot of them are wrong'uns and do not deserve their privileged position.
It sets a tone for the country in that who you know and who you are related to can count for more than what you are capable of.

I love my country but not the Royal family, Monarchy ties in with religion, I'm not religious either.
Give me a decent anthem and I'll proudly sing it!🇬🇧
 
I am in favour of a meritocratic society where anyone from any background can achieve anything due to their own effort and ability. A hereditary monarchy is exactly the opposite of that and is the very root of the class system that in my opinion holds our country back. It is amazing that if you are hiring for any role in the public sector, you have to go out of your way these days to show that you are not discriminating against anyone unfairly. And yet, our head of state gets the job through virtue of birth.

Are you claiming that to love this country you must love the Royal Family? How very authoritarian of you, which is of course the exact opposite of this country's values.

Once again 20s has nothing interesting to say about the subject, instead uses it as an opportunity to slag others off. I am starting to think that it is a parody account owned by SATW!
 
It’s not a job, it’s a vocation. I think having a four/eight year term President would be treated more like a job, and it would be the usual politicos going for it (so much for merit/privilege) or total non-entities like they have in Ireland and Germany which cost money rather than generate it.

The Monarch of the UK has soft power and known the world over. There’s a reason it’s survived.

Way back when these families established their dynasties they operated hand in hand with the church, which is why Henry the eighth falling out with the catholic church was such a big deal.
The king in his castle, the peasant in the field, everyone knowing their place and not changing anything. These were a massive part of the Roman Catholic/Church of England ideology.
How many of our resident monarchists are regular church attending religious people, they should be if their views are meant to make any sense.
