Yates warming the bench...Again

I see it has taken Swansea`s new manager even less time than the previous one to assess Yates and relegate him to the bench just as Critchley did two seasons ago. Surely they can`t all be wrong but to be fair he did come on today and hit the post ....although it was unmarked and from 2 yards out. Didn`t we do well to get what I imagine was a decent fee for him and get Rhodes on loan all season for no transfer fee.

We all have our opinions mine would appear to be close to those of Critchley and both Swansea managers this season. He always gave 100% I`ll grant him that but as a striker his scoring rate was poor especially without the penalties, he wasn`t good in the air had no great pace or skill on the ball. Nor a natural goal poachers ability like Rhodes to get in the right place at the right time and not a single assist this season ,not many with us either.

Yes and now an assist too. He has done well at Plymouth now doing well in a league above us.I could never understand why despite some promise we let him go without giving him a proper chance for us. Sheer stupidity.
He wasn't ready at the time. We got to the Championship without him. He got games in L1. He wanted games and we couldn't give him games at the time.

Well we were playing Nuttall at the time.He would surely have been better than him. Or after he did well at Plymouth on loan we just let him go.
Fair point but Nuttall didn't play that much? As I remember it. Hardie should have been given more games though, you're right.

Aside from Jerry’s work ethic which we all applaud, as a striker he is very good in lg1 but bang average in the Champ. He is easily knocked off the ball, he takes to long go get the ball under control, has ball control generally is average at best and he goes on long runs of games without scoring. I’m sorry to say but he is simply not good enough for the Champ. We got amazing money for him and Joseph as well - great business if you ask me

Jerry was great for us and we got a big sack of cash and Joseph when he left to further his career. Leave the bloke alone you cock !
We obviously disagree. But i `ll leave it to you to descend into personal abuse. I`d prefer just to have honest courteous debates which is what this forum should be about something else that we clearly disagree on..

Strange that we had fans saying that Swansea got the better end of the deal a few weeks ago. Now Swansea fans are saying that we got the better end of the deal. They're saying he's no better than Joseph. "We paid £3m + Kyle Joseph and I genuinely don’t know if he’s a better player than Kyle Joseph." I don't agree with that, but just shows how quickly things change in football.

Watched today’s game and Jerry looked a bit lost to be honest. Took up some poor positions when Swansea attacked. That said I’d love to see him back in tangerine 🍊

So we have comments saying he's the best player for us this decade, and another saying he had no skill on the ball.

The truth is somewhere in between I think. Anyone who thinks he has no skill on the ball should revisit some of the goals he scored in our promotion season.

I've just had a quick look on Twatter and Swansea fans certainly arent happy.
"C*nt of a player"
"Gives it the hard man but is a wetwip"
"Shit league 1 player"
"Blackpool have had our pants down"
"Won't throw himself at the ball"
"Needs a loan in a lower league"
"Not good enough. FACT."
I absolutely love the lad so it's been painful reading.

I do think some of our fan base got carried away with him as he's such a lovable character. On his day, Bowler was better than Yates. However, he scored some great goals for us and is comfortably a championship player imo

Spot on Daz.
Jerry and quite a few in our squad weren’t quite Championship standard but have flourished in League 1
Cannot blame Jerry for trying to better his career but it doesn’t appear as if it is going to work out for him.
We see it a lot, Matt Gills being a prime example
What I don’t get is players take a chance but if they end up warming the bench they will never be on show

Funny thing is though when a player tries to better their career then they get our blessing but when a manager does the same thing he is castigated.

Well it is not very intelligent to slag off our best player this decade is it?

He’s one of my favourite Pool players.

Always worked hard and provided some great moments, what’s not to like?

Nobody is saying Jerry was the new Ronaldo so I’m not sure why anyone would feel the need to give him stick. He was a key man in the promotion season and scored a few in the Championship too.

Probably lacked either a yard of pace to be a top striker. The o/p said he lacked skill though which is absolute rubbish. Go back and look at his goals, he’s a skilful player.

Keep collecting the milk bottle tops you’ll soon have your guide dog! 😂

Yates is easily one of our best players over the last few years. Provided some great moments.

That goal vs Watford at home last season for example showed the type of skill and finishing ability he has.

It’s probably been tough for him to adjust moving down to South Wales and having three different managers.

Think I’m right in saying he’s their top goalscorer with 7 goals still. It’s not amazing but not a shocking record.

If they deem him surplus to requirements then he’s always got a home here.

Well if it were me, I'd say last ten years if that is what i meant. This decade is the 2020's and that's how i read the post.
Maybe. But people say it all the time, worked here for a decade for e.g. If they say it now I don't think oh they've been here 4 years, they mean 10.

Either way he's not the best player. He's good. But we've had better.

Because every time he played he was crap?

Without Madine or Simms Jerry wouldn't have been the player he became.
He can't pay up top on his own which a lot of managers favour even under Appleton when wide of a 3 it was big Gaz who made him the space to score those three braces.

Swansea today against Southampton they played 4-3-2-1 how on earth does Jerry fit into that formation I've no clue.

you have to laugh at 1950's with the nerve of his hypocrisy. He uses Critchley as a back up of his opinion on Yates citing Critchley often leaving Yates out. But on this same thread he says the decision to let Ryan Hardie to go as "sheer stupidity". Mmmm... yep it was Critchley who let Hardie go! Doesn't quite sit with your point that does it 1950's?

To be fair to Critchley with this one, Hardie wanted to leave. He'd already had his loan spell at Plymouth and loved it, so Critchley just respected his wishes. I'm sure Critchley wanted to keep him, it was Grayson that fucked any chance of him wanting to stay up.

That is clearly what the Poster meant.

Slim pickings. Probably Yates that was our player. But he's hardly a Charlie or a Hoolaghan.

Why are there two threads about Jerry Yates when we’ve won away from home? Yates was so good for us. His goals in that promotion season, his assist for Kenny’s 2nd in the play off final, his goals in that first season in the champ, his assist for Madine in that win at home to Preston, his goals in the relegation season despite being a part of a really poor team, his goals in the 4-2 win at home to Preston. There wasn’t a game where he didn’t give his all for our badge.
