We have loads of attacking talent and yet insist on playing two holding midfielders for 90 minutes against the third lowest ranked side in the tournament. Not only that but we struggle to find those holding midfielders when passing it out of defence, and consequently spend the majority of our possession pointlessly passing it back and forth across the back four. Awful. Truly awful and unacceptable to what we should be trying to aspire to.
We seemed to have a tactic of trying to put corners on Phil Foden's head - one of the smallest players on the pitch. Then we take him off, despite him being literally the only England forward that could be bothered making any runs off the ball tonight. All of which were ignored by the midfielders by the way, preferring instead to play the ball back to the defence.
We then put Rashford on - a player totally out of form, instead of the one who has been tearing up the Bundesliga for Dortmund.
Basically, with England, if Harry Kane isn't completely in the zone, Southgate has absolutely no idea how to get us creating chances or scoring goals. And let's be honest Kane has been totally absent in these first two games, and I rate him highly. But I think it's maybe time to give someone else a go like DCL.
This all stems from Southgate pissing around in the friendlies with players that weren't even going to make the cut, and not using the time to try and get us playing in a style and pattern that the players can have confidence in. After the game he actually said that he didn't think we'd been patient enough?! Jeez. So many problems and i'm not sure Gareth has the answers, or a plan. I'd be delighted to have to eat humble pie, but I can't see it.
