England v Scotland Match Thread

What's more worrying than tonight is the prospect of playing France, Germany or Portugal in the knock out stage

2 anonymous games from Kane. Undroppable, I was told after the last one. How now?
He’ll get rested for the next game, we’ll put in a semi decent performance without him, and then he’ll come back in for the knockout stages where he will look deflated and disinterested and get no chances again.

You're not clarifying anything. Four points should get you through but until all games are played I reckon the answer to your question isn't known yet.
Well I know that.

But is it a probably or a possibly?

And is there a place for Alice Bands in top flight football?

After all the abuse aimed at England tonight (and rightly so I must add) credit to the Jocks man for man they outshone us tonight.
And Steve Clarke has more idea about football in his big toe than Southgate will ever have.
They played like a team that know what they are doing but lack a finisher. We look scared of departing from Southgates screenshots.

Dear me, that was truly dire.

Poor team selection, poor performance and poor Manager.

The difference between a Venables England and Southgates is embarrassing. Where was the passion??
You could pick any team from our squad and we should beat Scotland. Ffs it’s was one of the worst teams in the Euros we’ve just played, and we’re not up to it.
Pathetic. Don’t know what the problem is, but if all it needs to beat us is a bit of spirit then we’re knackered.

No plaudits from me 20’s, the guy is one dimensional. Safe, steady, but tactically short. Repeat of the last World Cup, where we stumbled our way to the semi-final.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw Henderson next game. That would just underline what Southgate is all about.
Jeez, well we will be in for a creative masterclass if that happens.

Not mathematically.

It's a great result, second place has an easier route 👍
didn't mean to put the thumbs up. Coming second and getting thru the last 16 means we come up against France earlier than we would if we won and they won their group as well. No easy path whichever route.

Two ex BFC managers and now ex BFC assistant manager played in this tie in 96.

More tenuous links as I get them...

Loved this one.

I got Calderwood and Hendry easily enough and then I'm thinking no way did Barry Ferguson play in Euro 1996, he hadn't played for Rangers then.

Just before I came on here and made a James Hunt of myself my old pal Google revealed it was Ince.

The only consolation from today’s results is that If England draw against the Czechs in the last game and go through as runners up, we avoid Portugal/France/Germany in the next round, so expect another borefest from Southgate next week

Don't tell anyone but I forgot him in the original post, a swift edit that no one noticed!

Southgate is sucking the life out of this tournament. UEFA should demand that he's sacked before the tournament fizzles out as the clueless FA will have him in charge for years to come.

I don't expect to win the whole thing but I do expect us to give it a go ffs. Complete and utter rubbish from start to finish. Mount and Sterling will play every game for ever and ever and ever no matter how shite they are while Foden is a bit quiet then gets hooked at the first opportunity. But still our best player.

I'd like to play against the Czechs in Rice's position please. Just wander about laying off the ball and never straying 3 yards from the centre-halves. I reckon I could still do that even at my age.

It's gormless football from a gormless manager.

The edgiest thing we did all night was take the knee.

Learn how to spell Baz it’s through not thru.🤡

I always thought at euro '96 that we had to beat Scotland as we fecked up our opener and drew against Switzerland. Would have been happy with a draw otherwise. We then went on to stuff the shite out of the dutch to give the Jocks a shot. It wasn't our fault they shagged the opportunity. Same today. Derby game. We could have picked up injuries or cards and didn't. Czechs didn't win so beat them or draw and we are through. Let the Jocks think they won. God bless 'em for trying. I predict Croatia will stuff them unfortunately. It was always about this game for them. They need to ditch the Braveheart shite and concentrate on winning more games.

I don't understand why Southgate took our best player off going forward (Foden) and replaced him with Grealish who likes to run in circles waiting to get fouled. Should of subbed Mount instead.

yep, but generally in the media he got the plaudits. You'll know from AVFTT that I'm passionate about my national football team and usually try to look for positives. There simply weren't any tonight.

Mount did ok, Sterling off for me, although one time in a hundred he'll do something special, not sure which other players can do that?

Rashford though? Why?

Foden really wasn't that good. He was poor too. Just not as poor as the other meant to be creative players.

What about Carver? Didn't we dally with him once?

....and then likely play France and I think not at Wembley

I wouldn't want to go overboard with Southgate over one game but media darling is all he is and that's just because he does everything they ask of him.

For me, he is one of the luckiest England managers of all time and couldn't believe he got the job in the first place.

I said I didn't want to go overboard with the criticism but you can add FA yes man to his attributes.

Not for me but I don't give a feck as Scotland give themselves a chance of progressing.

Really enjoyed that game. Was watching with our Scottish neighbours so was pretty relieved England didn’t lose and give them a chance to gloat.
A draw is not a terrible result for England, and that was a great performance by Scotland, and not just a backs to the wall effect either.
I haven’t seen anything so far to suggest England can threaten any of the big guns in this competition though.

Foden and Grealish need to start the next game. Grealish makes stuff happen because his first thought is to carry the ball forwards. Kane needs to actually stay upfront as we don’t have many runners in behind him and I think we only need 1 of Phillips and Rice.

Our corners were shit also.

Southgate seems to be scared of losing to me, a mixture of Grayson and Worthington.

In 3 years time after leading Blackpool to a mid table finish in the premier league Critchley reluctantly hands in his resignation to take on the poison chalice of being the next England manager.

Yep, although not that arsed about the next game, he needs to do something different.

Way too many are picked on reputation; Sterling and Kane being the biggest examples. We have the likes of Sancho, Calvert-Lewin and Grealish on the bench, who look so much sharper.

As for Shaw and James, they offered nothing going forward, Southgate got so much wrong tonight. Mount and Rice were anonymous for large spells and yet again our delivery was woeful. It was like Iceland all over again as so many corners hit the first man. I'd like to think Southgate is tearing into them but suspect he'll be too busy jaffing himself off at the clean sheet and dodging one of the big guns in the next round.

Agree with much of that apart from I thought Shaw played quite well
