England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 v Italy 🇮🇹 Euro Final 🏆 Official Thread 11.07.21

I’m disappointed as we nearly did it & progressed further than we have managed to for donkeys years. At least I’ve won the sweep. I really didn’t want to though. Close margins & unfortunately some poor pens. I feel sorry for those who missed, as the pressure must have been immense. I guess Southgate will still be in charge for the World Cup & I hope he learns from this, we are getting closer though.

TBH At least we won’t have to put up with a bandwagon jumping “beaming” Johnson on the front page of the Daily Fail!

It’s sad but that’s football, if you can’t hack disappointment then you are watching the wrong game, England gave it a good go but came up short is all. It’s been a brilliant tournament, no complaints from me 👍
Never won a tournament under a Tory Government or without a Blackpool player starting😉

WTF is this got to do with the government you melts. England failed again at a major tournament and it’s Boris fault. Ffs have a word with yourselves.

Oh well at least we can still sing the Nations favourite football song 3 lions, it would have been a shame for that to disappear. 60, 70, 80 90 years of hurt!! 🤣 🤣 🤣
In the event of England winning a tournament it will be changed to "no more years of hurt" , they'll still be singing it

What a missed opportunity, practically played the full tournament at home and still fucked it up. If that list of penalty takers was down to the players then some of the senior players need to check if they have a pair of bollox

Did you guys see poor Saka's face before he took his penalty? He was shitting himself. Why didn't Super (yeah, right) Jack Grealish volunteer to take a pen?
Southgate just said he decided who was taking them so that shuts you up. As well as on camera it seemed that in the huddle Southgate asked Grealish a question and he nodded. Sixth penalty if tequired? .

From my perspective, I started the tournament with my usual resentment towards the England team, wishing I supported someone else practically. I watched the first half of tonight's final feeling totally different, for the first time in living memory, really, so I'm grateful for that at least. Gutting to lose, but we have made a big lurch forward and we have a team that can compete with the top sides and win knock out games. Semi final in a world cup and final of the Euros. Winning requires a bit of luck. The margins are miniscule. If you keep getting to the last 4, you'll win once in a while.

I am absolutely gutted for Sancho, Rashford & Saka, that is some hard experience to learn and I hope it makes them stronger and better players, they are part of this exciting new young England squad, they just need to be used in a far more attacking formation, we have such exciting prospects and I fear Southgate won't change his ways. I hope he can.

Another shout out for Sterling who was immense this tournament and is going to get better yet, it's hard to believe he is only 25. He looked tired, unsurprisingly, this evening but he didn't exactly get much of the ball as we were playing far too deep trying to hang on to a 1 goal lead for 65 minutes.

At the very least, England have a solid team base to build on for next year's World Cup. The team has had experience in a final by playing a very sound defensive team in Italy which IMO, will go a long way. Will Southgate get the chop after those managerial choices during the game, and the pen shootout?

Big question is who could replace him?
He has got us to a final, he has lost to a top coach and a good team, nobody around who could instantly step in and go one step further, I think he gets another tournament.

We lost the final on penalties. Better than we’ve done in my 50 year lifetime.
We learn and we build on it.
Well done England and Gareth, nothing to be ashamed of at all 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

And god I hope the press and the media don’t go after them for this. We lost to a brilliant team and it was a tough game.

I’am going be frank tonight.

We started well tonight and got a great early goal but from then on we went backwards.
Italy deserved it no arguments.
Southgate far to negative tonight

Is Southgate going to Chuck it in I wonder? Didn’t want to say anything about the World Cup and seemed very down in himself in the interview.

Maybe Southgate needs to bring somebody in on the coaching side that can help him with the attacking side of the game.

But certain things also need to be highlighted.

If you don't win, you need to expect criticism. Southgate got a lot right and some things wrong

The issue with all this is its a bit like Blackpool playing without a lot of our creative best players and leaving them on the bench next season and being very negative in setup in games.

If we win games you get away with it but if not fans are screaming.

For eg. German fans are baffled by not playing Sancho, he's been a revelation in Germany. Foden has been brilliant for city. Grealish Etc.

We've said for years if only England had the talent to compete with the better possession sides etc, but this time WE DO.

We've got players to put out an amazing side who can pass and be a lot more positive and better than ever before and now we don't know how good we could actually be.

Well done to the players though have enjoyed the tournament, had some great moments, but can't help thinking what if.

Probably the best chance at home with the easier fixtures to get there to win something, but not to be.

Yeah but I’m big enough to look at the problem in hand and not point the finger at an obsession like you lot.

We didn't deserve to win that match. After a great start we defended too deep, gave them midfield and and they dominated most of the rest of the match. Southgate didn't react when they started to control the match and wasn't brave enough to go for the win in normal time, when he should have made some subs, like they did. Manchini outhought him. It was a pity because their defence looked vulnerable if you got around the back into the box. His choice of penalty takers must also be brought into a question, including players who had only come on 2 minutes before and a 17 year old. Why didn't he use players like Sterling and Shaw?

Exactly as I saw it re Grealish.

What sort of international manager decides a penalty shoot out line up, in a final, based on no pressure training sessions? Surely when he wrote that 5 down he must have thought that looks risky on 3,4 and 5.

That admission says it all.

Yep. Weak.

On the plus side Maguire's spot kick was the greatest pressure penalty I've ever seen.

*clutching at straws*
A small straw to clutch at but quite relevant in the scheme of things. You need a big heart to take a penalty hence it’s not always the forward players who have this. Maguire was pretty immense all night, a real leader and carried that forward into his penalty.

Constructive criticism absolutely.
Not hounded and destroyed, because one penalty different and he’d have been a national hero.
The cold light of day will tell the truth on tonight’s performance.

I recall you saying we were more composed than Spain or Italy. That was a big call, after watching that semi I knew both teams were better than us. We didn't disgrace ourselves that's reality. Time to regroup, unfortunately at 52 I've got a feeling we won't win something in my lifetime. Such a pity.
