Won two national team championship karate medals 1984 and 1985 with (dare I admit it) the Burnley Karate club. Not sure if it counts but played in the world chess olympiad for Jersey
I played for BASIL for a few years in the mid 80s we did ok. Only scar was the memory of a 14-1 defeat by Glasgow Rangers. They called us a rabble.I suppose that I shouldn't underestimate my achievement of keeping the BASIL football team going for 10 years. Not to mention a modicum of success by staying in the top division. Trying to put out 11 players from all over London, especially when some of those were on the p!ss all day previously watching us underperform once more.
Please reveal yourself. I was there that day. To be fair, it was end of season and we played a double header.I played for BASIL for a few years in the mid 80s we did ok. Only scar was the memory of a 14-1 defeat by Glasgow Rangers. They called us a rabble.
My name is Gary Vickers ex Baines Grammar School and yes I remember John Schofield ex Arnold who organised the teamPlease reveal yourself. I was there that day. To be fair, it was end of season and we played a double header.
We beat Bristol City first, 5-0. Wes then scored an early brilliant goal against Rangers. Bad idea - it was like disturbing a wasp nest!

Just been looking back at this thread and think it might have subconsciously lead to me making a comeback on the green baize!96 break at snooker at the old ICI club in 1987. Missed a easy blue of the spot for a century. Arse fell out.
Started playing again last few years ago and highest is 64. Eyes gone
I suspect they do hit it much harder, but again only when necessary. When you watch the seniors world championship, even players like Stephen hendry no longer have the cue power of the top players. Surprised me more than I expected that to be a top player even in a game like snooker requires current, consistent and extremely hard work.Just been looking back at this thread and think it might have subconsciously lead to me making a comeback on the green baize!
After a 21 year break from the game, I started playing again recently and seem to have caught the bug again. Forgot how big a full size table was and how easily it finds you out if you've not played in a long time and don't have a consistent technique.
However, I think I am starting to get there slowly but surely. Best break so far in solo practise is 52 and my best in a match against an opponent is 36. I've not started using much side yet as I was still getting used to potting angles so plenty of scope for improvement to come. Hopefully will eventually get that elusive tonne! Had one doing a practise routine on a 5ft table but not so far on a full size table!
Funnily enough, there was an ex-pro on the table next to me the night I got my 36. He had a 92 and then a 105 within a few frames of each other which put my efforts into perspective! I did learn from watching him though. No need to hit shots hard, he played everything so gentle unless it was absolutely necessary to hit harder. Maybe on TV it looks like they hit harder than they actually do.
I played for the Football league staff team at Wembley against the Wembley staff team , and I scored against the FA staff team at Bloomfield Rd at the Kop end with a left foot looping volley . I also broke my ankle playing at the old Den , again for the League staff team against Nationwide staff team who at the time were sponsoring the England team . Hope this helps
Me too. Back in the days of the plastic pitch we played there regularly. Cut to bits if you went to ground with sand infused grazes.Have scored at Deepdale
Played a ex pro twice in fylde lge last season from Cleveleys Mens. Must admit got a good start 40 I think. The guy played probably 3 power shots home and away games. His touch round the pink was fantastic to watch. Reads like a 70s porn film.Just been looking back at this thread and think it might have subconsciously lead to me making a comeback on the green baize!

I played in the Hogan Cup Final at Bloomfield Rd 1968/69.Me too and won 3-1
I never played in that game, I might have retired my boots by then. I did play against the Nationwide team a few times though, we played at the old Den , we also played them at Bloomfield rd.I may have played against you at Myerscough when Brian Marwood and David Moyes turned out? I played for the Nationwide Side that day
I too played on Deepdale a few times when it was plastic around 92-93 and I remember being shocked at how patched up it was, a real mess. I think they replaced it with grass one or two years later.Me too. Back in the days of the plastic pitch we played there regularly. Cut to bits if you went to ground with sand infused grazes.
Some of the artificial turf ended up as pathways at Hillside Golf ClubI too played on Deepdale a few times when it was plastic around 92-93 and I remember being shocked at how patched up it was, a real mess. I think they replaced it with grass one or two years later.
Being so used to sliding tackles I ended up with a few grazes and, yes, the sand got right into them,
Hi Trammo….it’s Alf…how you doing ?I climbed Everest in 1950 but my sherpa Unlucky Alf lost his grip on the camera as he was about to take a pic of me on the summit and it tumbled down the mountain never to be seen again. Consequently i could not prove i was the first.
