Your biggest sporting achievement?

Won two national team championship karate medals 1984 and 1985 with (dare I admit it) the Burnley Karate club. Not sure if it counts but played in the world chess olympiad for Jersey

Played badminton for school and college team, in tournaments against other colleges. Won the regional title one year. I was more of a singles player than a doubles tbh.

Played tennis for college and Uni. Also got a pretty decent ranking on the LTA.
Played sports 6 days a week. Average about 2-3hrs every day. Never picked up any bad injuries.

Was a good all-rounder at cricket but didn’t take it any further. Should have done, but just didn’t have the time to commit.

Played 1st half at Bloomfield Road as right back in one of those charity aid things, a few years ago. Never played right back before in my life, but it was the only place left! Did have a shot on goal from the half way line with my right foot. Bit annoyed I missed the target by a couple of feet. Maybe next time, lol.

Scored a header from an Alan Suddick cross in a pre season friendly at Stanley Park Extension.
Ended up winning 4-3 so header was fourth and winning goal.
Won Sunday League end of season penalty prize contest with 9/10 in mid 80s.

Played in and won the Lancashire u-16 Cup in 1976 at Burscoughs ground.

Played on Bloomfield Road 4 times, winning 3 and losing 1 in cup finals.

Played against Ally McCoist as a 14 year old kid.

I was the last person to captain a Blackpool side at Bloomfield Rd in the Premier League, the day before relegation.

Ok, ok, it was a ‘Football Aid’ match and I paid for the privilege. I nearly dropped dead after 5 minutes.

I suppose that I shouldn't underestimate my achievement of keeping the BASIL football team going for 10 years. Not to mention a modicum of success by staying in the top division. Trying to put out 11 players from all over London, especially when some of those were on the p!ss all day previously watching us underperform once more.

None really.
Played for the Regiment in Germany. (We weren't good.)
Also shot for the Regiment. I was pretty good.

I played for BASIL for a few years in the mid 80s we did ok. Only scar was the memory of a 14-1 defeat by Glasgow Rangers. They called us a rabble.

Please reveal yourself. I was there that day. To be fair, it was end of season and we played a double header.
We beat Bristol City first, 5-0. Wes then scored an early brilliant goal against Rangers. Bad idea - it was like disturbing a wasp nest!

Beating a young Dominic-Calvert Lewin’s Sheffield United team 3-1 in the FA Youth Cup. Before, unfortunately, being knocked out by a good Sunderland side in the 4th round.

My name is Gary Vickers ex Baines Grammar School and yes I remember John Schofield ex Arnold who organised the team

Scored twice for England*

Made it to the final of the primary school Yr 5/Yr 6 badminton tournament (despite being in yr 5) though much to my chagrin, when I was in yr 6 and felt a cert to win, the tournament wasn't held again.

Picked for same school team as former Pool and Man Utd legend Neil Whitworth played for albeit 5 years later.

Made a double save on the rec playing headers and volleys that my mate Tash still says is the greatest piece of goalkeeping he's ever seen.

*I say 'England' when I mean ' a team of lads from my school who played against some french lads once, but we called it England v France, so I'm claiming it.

Football - played in 3 winning Gledhill finals at Bloomfield Road - scored in 1 and won Lancashire Cup.

Athletics - came 2nd in Lancashire at high jump - U17 I think 🤔

96 break at snooker at the old ICI club in 1987. Missed a easy blue of the spot for a century. Arse fell out.
Started playing again last few years ago and highest is 64. Eyes gone 😎
Just been looking back at this thread and think it might have subconsciously lead to me making a comeback on the green baize!

After a 21 year break from the game, I started playing again recently and seem to have caught the bug again. Forgot how big a full size table was and how easily it finds you out if you've not played in a long time and don't have a consistent technique.

However, I think I am starting to get there slowly but surely. Best break so far in solo practise is 52 and my best in a match against an opponent is 36. I've not started using much side yet as I was still getting used to potting angles so plenty of scope for improvement to come. Hopefully will eventually get that elusive tonne! Had one doing a practise routine on a 5ft table but not so far on a full size table!

Funnily enough, there was an ex-pro on the table next to me the night I got my 36. He had a 92 and then a 105 within a few frames of each other which put my efforts into perspective! I did learn from watching him though. No need to hit shots hard, he played everything so gentle unless it was absolutely necessary to hit harder. Maybe on TV it looks like they hit harder than they actually do.

I suspect they do hit it much harder, but again only when necessary. When you watch the seniors world championship, even players like Stephen hendry no longer have the cue power of the top players. Surprised me more than I expected that to be a top player even in a game like snooker requires current, consistent and extremely hard work.

I may have played against you at Myerscough when Brian Marwood and David Moyes turned out? I played for the Nationwide Side that day
I played for the Football league staff team at Wembley against the Wembley staff team , and I scored against the FA staff team at Bloomfield Rd at the Kop end with a left foot looping volley . I also broke my ankle playing at the old Den , again for the League staff team against Nationwide staff team who at the time were sponsoring the England team . Hope this helps

I'm part of the current four ball CSSC champions, won at St Pierre. We defend our title in October at Forest of Arden.

First trophy I recall winning at school was for shot put and was engraved with my name followed by the word 'Shot'. That was the only posthumous prize I ever won.

Played for Blackpool Under 16 and as A Trialist for Halifax Town when they finished 3rd in what is now League 1.

Played for HM Customs & Excise representative team.

Later in life played tennis in the Ribble League

I earned my county colours in Goal for Lancashire Army Cadet Force although we didn’t win the national tournament I did however make a couple of class saves (for a 15 year old). Also saved a pen and picked up an award for joint player of the tournament. Held at Fulwood Barracks over 3 days.

Played a ex pro twice in fylde lge last season from Cleveleys Mens. Must admit got a good start 40 I think. The guy played probably 3 power shots home and away games. His touch round the pink was fantastic to watch. Reads like a 70s porn film.
Beat him twice with though. Both black ball games

Probably school senior 1500 metres champion, and senior cross country runner up.
Had a good engine then, been uphill ever since.

1988 Fylde Cricket League Champions and Stuart Cup Winners

Civil Service FC London Vets footie London Cup and League winners 2013 — Dave Besant presented without dropping the Trophy

Playing for Cooksons Bakery (Blackpool) v Ashworth pies (Preston) in an annual challenge match at Deepdale got the winner in a 3-2 win at the town end there was 127 watching

Some amazing achievements on this thread.

I've not got much but I once beat George Best at pool, then we teamed up for a game of doubles and beat a couple of randoms.

Also, I can proudly claim to never having missed a penalty at Wembley.

Must've missed this thread first time around.

Completed the Lakeland 100 in 2015 in about 34 hours but have this year taken up crown green bowls so maybe the best is yet to come. 😉

Scored an absolute screamer over the then first choice school goalkeeper at St Tom's, playing for a ragtag second 11 to give the school team confidence.
Won the long jump in my final year at school at Stanley Park sports field.
Scored at the Town End, Deepdale on the glorious plastic.

I may have played against you at Myerscough when Brian Marwood and David Moyes turned out? I played for the Nationwide Side that day
I never played in that game, I might have retired my boots by then. I did play against the Nationwide team a few times though, we played at the old Den , we also played them at Bloomfield rd.

Decent schoolboy footballer: Town team, Fylde representative teams, played for a very good team coached by Jack Chapman for a season, and won 3 schoolboy finals at Bloomfield Rd.

My lad was a far better player than me and played a season with Aaron Ramsdale, rooming with him on an international tournament in Holland, and played with Nat Phillips and against Marcus Rashford on several occasions.

Me too. Back in the days of the plastic pitch we played there regularly. Cut to bits if you went to ground with sand infused grazes.
I too played on Deepdale a few times when it was plastic around 92-93 and I remember being shocked at how patched up it was, a real mess. I think they replaced it with grass one or two years later.

Being so used to sliding tackles I ended up with a few grazes and, yes, the sand got right into them,

yep, missed this thread first time around as i was on holiday. My sporting ability pales into insignificance when compared to reading some of the fantastic achievements some of you have done and respect to you all.

My cubs team [53rd] won the trophy and we were presented with medals by Brian London. I won the Blackpool Schools Cross Country championship, think it was at under 12's. Won various darts trophies with my best moments being winning the Captains trophy where I played against some of the Fylde's finest and I won my team the league on the last day of the season when we played our closest rivals, they were a point ahead of us and it was 4-4 going into my game and I checked out on 86, [18,18 bull] to win it. Won many dominoes events both at straight dominoes and 5 & 3's. Won the individual deck quoits on a P&O cruise back in the 70's. Scored over 80 goals one season back in the mid 70's. 50 odd on the sunday and 30 odd on the saturday.

One regret. I'd love to be able to play golf to any sort of level. Still playing the game but there won't be a worse player than me. I played last week and probably as well as I've played for twenty years. Still only scored 102. Never broke a 100 even though I've come close , my best being 100 at Knott End about 20 years ago. To all you good golfers, I salute and envy you.

Was invited to Lords for an awards luncheon for those that had done most for cricket in their area/community. Other than that Faced Andy Roberts , Michael Holding & joel Garner i the nets at Fleetwood CC (I can still smell the leather as it fizzed past my nose & the shit in my pants as i thought I was about to die)

Scored 2 for Pool B team v PNE B in 69 at the Farm (won 4-2), played alongside Greg Moore up front his dad was on the board at the club at the time.

Some of the artificial turf ended up as pathways at Hillside Golf Club

I’ve had 2 hole in 1’s.
Won a mid week competition but still not got my name on the board in the clubhouse, that’s my aim

I climbed Everest in 1950 but my sherpa Unlucky Alf lost his grip on the camera as he was about to take a pic of me on the summit and it tumbled down the mountain never to be seen again. Consequently i could not prove i was the first.

Nothing mega really but once got 4 consecutive 6’s in an over. I couldn’t bat to save my life but the bowler was pretty dire, I just swung the bat and it was a shortish boundary.
Played snooker all my life (still do) and only ever managed a 56 break.
Once had a 116 check out in darts.
