Your biggest sporting achievement?

Taking Southampton to the top of me and my mates Subbuteo league in 1974, pipping the mighty Leeds to the title. This, despite his many attempts to put me off with underhand tactics including drags and waterlogged pitches 😎
Great achievement with a club as big as Southampton.

My worst sporting achievement...

I trialled for RAF Valley cricket team in the 70s.
Did well in the trials.
Got selected to bat at 7.
The last thing my manager said before I went in to our first match against RAF Cranwell was "Don't lift your bat for a few balls"
I did and was bowled first ball.
Second match was against RAF Leeming.
Same advice given.
First ball looked easy, again I ignored his advice.
Out first ball.
I wasn't selected again.
:)

Some of you might not consider racing slot cars as a sport, but they contain a motor, I consider it a motorsport, I actually won a main grade title at the national championships back in May, in the saloon class, another Blackpool driver won main grade in F1.

Represented GB in swimming against Holland & West Germany 1975 in Holland. Was Sharon Davies first International too, sadly my first & last, but still proud.

(Hengello Holland Aug 2/3rd 1975)

We broke the 4 x 100m Free under 16 GB record, which I swam the anchor leg.
I did the 200IM - 2m.16s
100m Free - 57.5s
We’re you sent home in disgrace for trying to chat her up? 😂😂

Many many moons ago I won the Dog & Partridge pie eating comp. There was some stiff opposition but my " wafter " ( the pies were asbestos hot ) had a great wafting technique ) Used to play for them as well. In NSW our team won the state masters comp. Scored at Maine Rd in a comp ( my boss was Steven Bowler who owned Man C for a while ). Also came a gallant runner up in the yearly fancy dress pram race between Dunes and Dog and Partridge...the running was ok ..but the pints down in one did me in 🤣

Completed the London Marathon 8 times.
Summitted all of Scotland's Munros (mountains over 3000' and there are 282 of them).
Soloed Point V Gully on Ben Nevis - Goggle it to see how scary that is!
First ascent of the longest & hardest ice climb in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh (Red Chimney, Grade IV.5) - it was an illegal activity at the time so was climbed at night to avoid the attention of the local Constabulary!
Climbed to over 7000m in the Himalaya.
Survived two avalanches - one of which buried me.
Cycled London-Edinburgh-London Audax in less that 96 hours & Paris-Brest-Paris in less than 90 hours.
Selected as a full international for Scotland in a paragliding competition versus England. Turned down the opportunity as I am a proud Englishman & it didn't feel right representing them.
Finished 2nd in the Scottish National Paragliding Championships.

Golf is my game - Won the Ashton Trophy, the Lytham Green Drive Trophy (with course record), the Spencer Trophy, The Silver Niblick, the Wyreside Trophy, the Grants/Evening Gazette knockout at Turnberry, the East Riding Championship, 5 European Championships, 15 County titles.
Unfortunately I’m 75 now and well past my sell by date!!

Played in 4 cup finals at Bloomers for Baines Grammar School and scored 4 goals. Played three times for Blackpool Schoolboys at Under 14 and Under 15 level. Had the shit kicked out of me by George Berry when he played for BJFF and St Thomas of Canterbury. I then disappeared into well deserved obscurity having then discovered alcohol and women.

Paris-Brest-Paris is on my bucket list.
Was looking to do the Inverness 1200 audax this year but I'm going to give myself another 12 months at least to build up to a 1000km+ event.

Being pretty decent at skateboarding and snowboarding, got sponsored for both when I was younger and ended up being head judge for the British snowboard association for five years in the 90’s
Do you know Simon White, AS?
Moved from Fleetwood as a teenager and become a pro rider for Santa Cruz snowboards.
Runs the snow park in Flane and also coached the Swedish womens Olympics team

Won the Town sports Obstacle race, back in the day. I have also scored on the dreaded Deepdale pitch and also on Bloomers. Ski lessons with a world champ too.

Compleated the munros (Scottish hills over 3000’). 32 years between the first (Ben Nevis) and my final one. There were 284 of them when I finished, now there are two fewer because of more accurate surveying techniques.

Scored at Bloomfield Rd, Played for Pool Reserves. Won Lancashire Sunday Cup Final Football with Warwick Southpool. Won the Cockspur National Cricket final at Lords and Lancashire Cup (x3) with Blackpool CC. Won the Palace Shield, Meyler Cup and also the A Division batting (average) and wicket keeping award (x3). Played along side Bloodtangerine in the Walking Football team.

There were 284 when I finished them too. 25 years between my first & last. I like you use of compleat.

Quality.

Played Cricket for a combined Lancashire schools team in Australia in 1991, we were U15's but played an U21 side containing Brendan Julian & Matthew Slater (Both played tests for Australia) and got battered! We were bowled out for a total of 38, i top scored with 20! All my runs came from edges either through or over the slips! I was batting an No 6 and was in for the 2nd ball of the 2nd over! Not a great start to the tour!

I also played against Andrew (Freddie Flintoff) in his 1st game of men's cricket, He was 12 and i was 14 in the match. I don't remember the match but the score card was published in the telegraph when England won the ashes in 2005! my dad still has the article in a scrap book at home. (I had scored over 70 centuries at various levels between the age of 12 & 34 before i gave up cricket).

Also Played Rugby League for the combined Armed forces side against Wigan, St Hellen's & London Broncos before i sustained a serious shoulder injury and had to retire from rugby.
who are you ????

now this one is obvious ... surely only won die hard Pool fan played cricket at Lords for Blackpool :)

Finished 3rd at the North West Judo championships. Represented North West area (Lancs, Merseyside, Manchester, Cumbria, Cheshire) in the national championships and had a strong chance of getting a medal. Broke my arm in the second fight which needed a metal plate and 3 screws to fix it. I never really competed at that standard again.

That's a coincidence; there's a team photo with you in the Gazette today (photo 3):

I was a mascot once in the 80’s at Bloomfield Rd. My junior club Wyre Juniors were there as ball boys and my name was drawn out to be the mascot. Typically the club didn’t have any junior kits so I wore one of the actual teams strips that drowned me as a 9 year old! Still loved running out with the team though.

Not really a proper sporting achievement, but I was on the pitch at the ethiad, and part of the half time games. On my second attempt, passed the ball from the edge of the d and hit the ball which was on the centre circle. First person to achieve it, won 2 hospitality tickets.

Also another claim to fame was that the back of my head was all over Twitter, sky sports news, soccer am, and made global headlines. I was the proud owner of the infamous trialist shirt during those dark days.

Unfortunately not. I played with Bandagem at Lords for Blackpool CC along with many other finals and at Old Trafford and Egbaston. Also played Basketball for Warrington in the National league both in this country and in Europe. Finally got to run the London Marathon as well.

I only ever won the Newton Trophy 36 holes on my home course at Fleetwood with a 9+ gross.

Where's your home course CAGU - North Shore? Trying to think who you could be 😀

Was a great day RSS.
Mark Butcher was playing for Cheam that day.
It was a great day. There was also another two in the cheam side who went on to have good county careers so made it even better as we were just basically a team of lads who liked a few beers and happened to be half decent at cricket. 🍻🤣

That'll teach you trying to get off to a flyer 😉

I started off at Blackpool Park then moved away to live in Scarborough. When I came back in 1974 I joined Old Links. Then in 1983 I moved to Cambridge and joined Gog Magog Golf Club where I am still a member and play off 3 handicap. I’m 76 in a few weeks so the game is getting harder everyday!
Tanger, I always enjoyed playing at Fleetwood

Fleetwood was a great place to play as a junior. A bit different now I'm a member at Lake Karrinyup playing off 11. I need to put some more practise in and aim for single figures. Amazing off 3 at 76. Shooting your age is some achievement.

Wow looks amazing! Lucky you!

Won the egg and spoon race, sports day 1992. People still speak of it, "it was like the egg was glued to the spoon" they say.

And a bl..dy good bowler you were too!

Unsurprisingly mine are in bowling.

In team play I've won the Fylde Amateur League title with Hambleton three times. It's commonly regarded as the best standard league in the area.

Individually I've won the Civil Service nationals 5 times in pairs and once in singles. That's not quite as impressive as it sounds as only half the CS regions play crown, the rest are flat and most struggle to adapt.

I lost the 2006 Carleton Floodlit final, which is probably the highest standard comp I'd made significant progress in to date. But this weekend I hope to pass that as I've qualified for the first time for the last 64 of the Autumn Waterloo Handicap. I play John Bailey who won it 2005 and lost the 2016 final, so a tough ask but looking forward to it!
Might be a daft question but is it still played at the Waterloo?

Sadly not. It's staggered along for years thanks to the commitment of a small group, but finally called time on. I walk past now on match days, all the stands have been removed (it held well over 3000 at it's best) and the greens been left for kids to run on.

Now been restarted as the New Waterloo at Fleetwood bowling club, this is it's first year. There's been a good response, it was a 512 entry and they only missed a handful to fill it.

I'm 80-1. Quite a weird feeling seeing odds against your name. Playing second favourite at 6-1

Is it crown green?

Good luck !!!
