5th TEST

Nothing speaks more to the mindset of English cricket fans for a cricket thread on the day of Broads last game with England dominant and acres ahead in the game that the first posts are moaning about not taking singles. To cap it off Broad smashes a 6 the next ball. Love it. G'wan Broady get a 5fer now
you'd have a point if Broad was trying to retain strike but even Anderson wasn't taking singles so therefore you don't. And sure it's a special day for Broad but the bigger picture is England winning the test and Anderson the no 11 batsmen refusing singles just makes your point look rather daft.

Jimmy is a better sweeper and can get boundaries better off spin

It's a nice Sunday morning. England have a near 400 lead. Let's have fun and enjoy watching the cricket eh

I know Foakes is better but Jonny hasn't always been this bad. He needs to get a bit trimmer and sort himself out
Bad series to have a bad spell. If he was a footballer he wouldn't have been in contention with that level of fitness impacting his game.

I don't think JB is at the level of fitness to be the agile keeper you'd want.

Pleased for Broad today. Went out on his terms and ensured all the media are all over him today (Sundays and TV). I'm forever the cynic and don't get me wrong I don't begrudge Broad even a word of the praise he's getting, but it seems timed with a purpose.

I said above that I think he's better than Anderson, just because HE makes things happen out of little. Not many could do that over the years.

Another game where we lost a stupid amount of overs the first three days despite rain forecast day 4 and 5.

It’s beginning to look a bit as if Wood and Moeen might not be fit to bowl any more in this game?
Both still on the field I think so perhaps they are available to Stokes?

Trouble is the pitch is decent, ball is doing nothing, rain could be coming and they are finally batting as I thought they might all summer. Problems!

I think Monty shot 87 today, that’s how tough it is, unbelievably difficult
On a golfing front the weather in Hoylake today is every bit as bad as last Sunday. I walked across the course yesterday as the Open travelling circus was slowly being packed up for another year.

Australia managed to bowl 80 overs yesterday. With the light being good at this time of year, they really should be made to bowl 90 overs.

In fairness they aren't bowling much spin because there is no Lyon and they don't trust Todd but still, make them play on. They should always be made to play till 7 at least, if there haven't fulfilled the overs.

It must be harder today than last Sunday, it certainly looks like it is

Minor miracle? Very little chance according to the Met office, Australia will get those runs easily if it's a full day
Yes got my wording wrong no way it’s going to be a draw but a victory on the cards as it stands it’s Australia but early wickets tomorrow morning and the pendulum could well swing.

I’d say all results still possible. Australia favourites for now for me, but not too much room for error.
The major problem for England is the resilience of their bowlers.
It looks like Stokes might only have Broad, Anderson, Root and Woakes at his disposal?
Maybe Wood and Moeen will be OK for tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem very likely.

Set up nicely for a great day tomorrow, advantage Australia because in effect they are now chasing 250 rather than nigh on 400, but once again the first session will be crucial, if we don't take out the top two or three before lunch then for me the Aussies will canter to a win.

Just watching the highlights. Did Jimmy Anderson deliberately bowl that ‘bumper’ at David Warner’s head?
He has generally got such great control of his bowling!

Aussies will have won this series playing some extremely dull cricket. Bar Khwaja and maybe that one Mitch Marsh innings I can't think of any batsman who's been remotely entertaining.

Up until this weekend four of the top five batsman in the series were English, not often you don't win the Ashes when that happens.

The problem for England is that Australia don't need to win. They don't need to keep the run rate up and therefore they can just play it safe, hence why Labuschagne stayed in for two hours and only got 9 runs. They don't need to take any risks.

This series has been a tale of two bowlers - Wood and Lyon. When we didn't have Wood and they had Lyon, they edged it, and when the reverse was true we edged it. Unfortunately, the ones we edged were disrupted by the weather. Just pure bad luck. But there doesn't seem that much between the two sides.

Can't believe people are saying Aus are favourites. It only takes a couple of wickets and how many times have you seen a pair in a good partnership come back next day and get out without adding many?

The key to who wins will be Marsh and Carey. If they get in together they can win it, if they don't....

Broad and Anderson one last hurrah.

Great start by the wizard and England. We quite simply have to keep going and make the most of these conditions.
